Ryanair...might get you there
by lyagushka | Mar 06 '03
Pros: Extremely cheap prices for intra-European flights.
Cons: There are obvious reasons why the fares are so low.

Firstly you ought to be grateful to low cost carriers such as ryanair who've brought down costs of the major carriers due to fierce competition. This time in say 1985 most people couldn't afford to fly as a fly to Paris may have been £300 or so with BA. With the likes of Ryanair you pay such a cheap price, knowing you wont get support, but in the event of a cancellation and you say for instance fly with easy jet for two legs at £50 each on top of the £50 you originally paid, you are still only paying half the price the none low-cost carriers would have charged for a single flight. If you have the cash, pay a bit more and fly with someone more reputable. Some people, however don't care which way or how long it takes to get their as long as its cheap. LCC (Low cost carriers) were originally set up to allow those who could not previously afford it, the luxury of air travel - usually abroad. If you're going to be a snob about it, dont buy cheap tickets!! pretty simple philosophy i'd say.
secondly, once the gate is closed, the numbers go to the captain. ie pax no's and it is calculated the av. weight of each person their baggage (done very quickly), so CoG can be worked out and checked, landing distances required, esp on damp RW's and uphil shopes the numbers are factored by 30%, and lift off/rotation speeds V1, V2,VR etc are adjusted.
These numbers then go straight to ground crew loading baggage and fuelling staff so the exact fuel is on board. By the time you are 5 mins late, the crew are briefed ready to go, aircraft is being loaded, and fuel is being pumped in; so the answer is no you can't 'just' go through, the gate closes, it tough.
thirdly, you can't just add another slot in. the slot timetable has been carefully arranged by someone so that ATC can comfortably cope - bearing in mind they may only be 1 guy controlling everything in a 100m raduis circus - and so that the airport can cope in an emergency should such event occur. In the event they did just add another flight the next day, and ATC was overloaded and there was a mid air collision your family would be the first people to sue say that one guy.
I wish you people would think about these things before winging. The aviation industry is a lot more complex than you might think. Try watching a few episodes of Air Crash Investigation or something on National Geographic, might give you a slight idea of how things work.
Rant over, sorry, but think about it first.

We had a similar expreience! (Reply to this comment)

Our flight back from Venice Treviso was cancelled due to fog. The aircraft had been diverted to Trieste and the passengers bussed in from there to Venice. I wonder if they got home? Ryanair had one person handling the situation and eventually others joined them, but eventually they all beat a retreat into their offices. We were then left to fend for ourselves, wiaitng in a huge queue caused by four other of their cancelled fligts, and eventually told we could fly home on Tuesday, 3 days later. I wonder to this day why they could not bus us to the aircraft sitting over at Trieste? They probably flew it home empty so as not to be late for their next flight. This appears to be the way they massage their punctuality figures! Meanwhile we had to make our own way to Marco Polo airport (also Venice), then pay £311 per person (7 in our group) to get back to Manchester on Lufthansa, and then pay for a mini bus to get back to Liverpool where we had left our cars.
Make sure that the risk of travelling with Ryanair are fully understood before you book the flights. They may start cheap, but could end up costing the earth.

I understand that you were not happy, because of your doughter missing her flight. BUT isn't it YOUR fault you missed it? Ryanair says it is best to be at the airport two hours before departure. Driving 30km wouldn't mean missing your flight when you listened to their comment!

I used Ryanair and i am very positive about them. I will sure use them again!

On one of the flights they left 10 minutes late, but they arrived on time. They did manage to unload and reload an aircraft in 25 minutes.

The only thing is that you should read their restrictions on luggage-weight and transfer-responsibility. The transfer-risk is your own risk so you should or not take transfers, or take a lot of time between the flights (at VERY least three hours), or you should book and pay for two transfers by knowing you take the first if on time and the second if you're late. Even that is far cheaper than flying KLM,BA, ELAL or SAS

btw: Ryanair does never overbook an aircraft!!!, Compared to one of the above mentioned high-fare-airlines Ryanair is using quite modern and safe planes.

my daughters spoilt holiday (Reply to this comment)
by sirrom
This is a copy of the email I sent to Ryanair of which predictably they never replied to.
It is worth noting, when you book, that there seems to be no feedback email provision on their website ..I wonder why ?

Dear sir,
I am disappointed at the fact that my daughter has lost her holiday because she was Five minutes late past the so called deadline, which I acknowledge, is not your fault, However, she was kept waiting for another five minuets before anyone would see her, making it even less likely that she could board.
I found the explanations from your staff difficult to believe having observed similar situations with others on previous occasions resulting in compassionate last minute efforts to try to resolve a desperate station. I do feel that in the remaining 35 min's, an effort to allow her to board could have been achieved if they really wanted to.
Any reasonable person aware of this would have to say "Shame on you".

This is a Copy of my email to the Highways
department.and their reply.

Dear Sir/Madame.

This evening I drove to Stanstead airport to take my daughter and her friend from the direction of Cambridge assuming that the Airport would be well signposted on the M11 but instead there was one comparatively small seemingly ambiguous signpost with a tiny aircraft motive at the top to direct passengers to a major international airport.
Doubtless many people like ourselves were confused and miss the turn, resulting in another 24 mile trip to the departure desk too late to board the plane.
I am not blaming you for my daughters disappointment as I am aware that other factors were involved that we should have addressed however I would be grateful if you would look into the problem as I do feel that if the signage had been as good as that on the approach to the airport as it was from the other direction on the M11,
it would have made the difference between my daughter not missing her flight and consequently her holiday.
The airline staff acknowledged that the signpost is very poor and needs attention and that all the time they are having to contend with people missing their flights with this as a major contributing factor.
I would welcome your comments on this matter as a matter of urgency.

Dear Mr Morris

I am writing with reference to your email of 10th June to the Highways
Agency Information Line.

I am responding on behalf of Carillion-URS who are one of the Highways
Agency's managing agents. I wanted to let you know that I referred your
complaint to one of the team here, who will be responding to your concerns
regarding the small sign directing passengers to Stansted. The lady in
question is on leave until Friday, but will be available to answer your
query on her return.

Yours faithfully

Stephanie Beecher

The moral is, do not expect any compassion from Ryanair. It is in my observation clearly not their policy.

Yours wasn't the only negative review up until I posted mine! The story seems to be pretty consistent across the line. But yeah, you'd better know what you're getting into if you fly with this carrier and be prepared for just about anything. Thanks for commenting.

Drew, yes it is a big gamble. So far as I know, no airline will accept responsibility for weather delays. But most will run an extra flight to replace a cancelled one and most will also accept responsibility for getting you to your connection on time or your final destination.

Nightmare!

I must admit, I would never book a connecting flight when using Ryanair, for the very reasons you mention. As for liability, aren't all these budget airlines much the same in not accepting responsibility?
It's a bit of a gamble.
