My first (and only other cruise) was was back in the mid-1980's when I took a Carnival cruise to the Caribbean. I was so un-impressed with the whole experience that I never even considered taking another cruise again. However, when my family and friends wanted to go on a cruise during the first week of 2000, I relented and joined the group. My first impression of Dawn Princess was one of (I have to admit) wide-eyed wonder. It had been so long since I had been close to a cruise ship that I forgot how darn large those ships can be. And since the Dawn Princess is a 77,000 ton ship, you can be sure that it was very impressive.
The crew was very friendly and they stayed that way throughout the entire week-long cruise. The food was well prepared and the variety of choices at dinner was nice. We had a two-and-a-half year old in our group and the dinner staff bent over backwards to accommodate his restrictive taste in food (chicken strips, spaghetti w/o sauce, and french fries to name a few). The rooms were small but didn't feel crowded (I happened to have an outside room with a very large window). And the cabin steward was very accommodating to my irregular wake-up times (yes, I chose to sleep-in on occasion as opposed to going on an excursion at one of the islands).
The amenities available on ship include numerous dance clubs and lounges, a casino, a 24-hour buffet, dining rooms, shops, three swimming pools, five whirlpools, and virtual reality golf (I was actually the first player they ever had to delete from a game because my skillful play landed me in the ocean off of Pebble Beach and we couldn't get my ball back on shore). Putting my golfing mishap aside, I still had a great time and would recommend the Dawn Princess to anyone who is interested in taking a cruise to the Caribbean.
