| TheSmartTraveler's Full Review: Abaco Islands |
Review Topic: Overview
If you are looking for neon casinos, gigantic resorts, and pushy people, avoid the Abacos. Great Abaco and its twenty-five other cays and islands make up the second-largest land area out of all of the Bahamas' seven hundred islands. People come here to get away from it all, boat, and fish. Most of the Abacos are not very developed, and you'll probably be getting around using a bicycle or golf cart. People who don't want to be too far away from restaurants, stores, and an airport should stay in Marsh Harbour in Grand Abaco. Treasure Cay was named by National Geographic as one of the ten best beaches in the world. It is a thirty minute drive from Marsh Harbour.
The Abaco Beach Resort is where you should stay if you want a central location with all of the amenities. You can rent a boat to hop to other islands for a day trip, or take a ferry between Marsh Harbour, Guana Cay, Hope Town, and Man-O-War Cay. Each route has from three to eight trips a day, and the round-trip fares are about twelve dollars. If you rent a boat you will pay at least one hundred dollars for the day, but you will be able to stop at some of the more secluded beaches.
If you go to Guana Cay by ferry or your own boat on a Sunday, take the free shuttle to Nipper's bar and grill and enjoy their pig roast. It's on a beautiful seven mile long beach.
