Most of the people I know prefer to go abroad for their summer holidays - to escape to the warmer climates and sun drenched beaches of Spain or Greece. However, my prefered holiday destination is the north coast of Cornwall. It's not the kind of holiday you brag about but I like the golden sands of the West Cornwall Peninsula.
The 3 miles of golden sands stretches from the edge of St Ives to the rocky reaches of Godrevy Point. And I'm not sure if it is 3 miles in length, but there is a lot of space along the beach and it's ideal for walking along. Walking probably isn't what you intended from your summer holiday though, and the beach is one of the finest in England - great for bathing on! The coastguards are particularly vigilant as well and they have an ideal viewing point in their huts set up on the dunes.
The dunes are another thing that the area has going for it. Where the beach stops they begin and many of the holiday resorts are set into the dunes - at least the more accesable parts. There is an area that is far to hilly to be built on, but it provides a great walk. It is quite scenic as well - which isn't something you'd expect of sand dunes. The scenery comes in the shape of an old explosives factory that was built upon the dunes, so it was harder to locate by air in World War II. It is interesting to walk round looking at the remains of buildings dotted about the dunes. It isn't just buildings though - there are remains of railways - long factories, blast pits, etc. There is even a completely intact chimney with a message of dedication written on it.
There are various holiday sites on the dunes, all of them feature caravan and tent pitches, lodges and chalets. There is little to seperate the various holiday camps and it is a case of looking around and finding the one you like the best. Two of my favourite are the slightly more relaxed atmosphere of the Beachside holiday park (www.beachside.co.uk). And the more lively St Ives Bay park (www.stivesbay.co.uk) which has a lot more going on and is more suitable for families.
There are a lot of attractions around Cornwall and some that are very worth visiting - Lands End and St Ives for example. Though the attractions around the area do require some driving and travelling. Particularly Lands End, and it may be just as enjoyable if you stay on site all day. (http://www.beachside.co.uk/cata/index-cata.htm) is the link to follow to sample some of the areas attractions as there are far to many to list here. But some of my favourites include Paradise Park that is situated in Hayle (near the holiday parks). Paradise Park is a bird zoo, if that is the right word. It is both fascinating and fun - the eagle demonstration is unmissable. My other favourite is the town of St Ives itself. The town is a great place to view art and craft works. With several galleys situated in the backalleys. There are also several nice beaches that make the town a great place to spend the day.
All in all the West Cornwall Peninsula is a great holiday resort if you want to stay in the country or visit it. The beach is fantastic and the attractions add to the experience and magic of the area - particularly if you stand on the cliffs at the first and lest pub at Lands End and just stare out to the sea. This is even better if you have just seen the attraction on the Lands End complex about the mysteries of the sea. Cornwall isn't the sort of place you want to visit if there is too much rain though and bad weather can spoil this holiday. It can be very hot though especially if you go during the summer season. Which is why this holiday is more suited to families. Older people might enjoy the walks and scenery though.
