| bobnewman's Full Review: Frankfurt am Main |
Frankfurt, where I used to live on Plattenstrasse, is a teeming metropolis with great history and plenty to do. However, since the wall came down, many large cities in Germany have experienced substantial social decay due to high unemployment caused by former West Germany having to absorb the untrained and undisciplined workers of East Germany. Evidence of this exists everywhere, with the proliferation of graffiti being an example. When I returned to Frankfurt after a 16 year absence in 1999, I was shocked to see every building downtown covered with graffiti as far up as an arm can reach. In the early 80s that kind of thing didn't happen. What a shame.
On the up side, Frankfurt is as lively and fun a city as exists in Europe. The restaurants can be fabulous, with many in the Sachsenhausen area (just across the Main from downtown) being superb, offering fine game dishes and a host of superior German wines (if you haven't gotten into German wines, especially the whites, you are truly missing out). Sachsenhausen is a cool walking district on the river with lots of pubs and restaurants that you must not miss. Romantic walks along the river are a favorite, where white swans glide by silently. Go at night for the most fun.
Also, be sure to take a boat cruise on the Main and the Rhein to see the castles and vineyards.
