I was fortunate enough to live a full year on the island of Crete. While I was there I got to travel to all the different islands, but Crete really became my home. Now that I am gone, I miss the people and friends that I made there.
There is a distinct difference between Greeks and Cretans. The Cretans have almost always been separated from the main-landers and the rest of the islanders. They have developed their own unique quality of life and way of doing things. Now on Crete is in a hurry. Believe me not a soul.
Their are mainly things to doing on the island of Crete from Minoan palaces, caves, tourist traps, night clubs, beaches, beaches and more beaches. While Crete doesn't offer Greece's best beaches, they certainly are near the top.
A key note for Crete and all of Greece is not to visit in the Winter. The island almost completely shuts down.
Crete is the largest Greek island but you can drive across it in about 4-5 hours. It is definately a place to same a week or two.
I was lucky enough to have a house on the beach, learn to interact with the locals and learn their customs. The Cretans have a wonderful Easter that they will gladly share with others. The locals are very friendly and making an effort to speak Greek goes a long way. Most know English and won't always speak it immediately, so try a few Greek words and you'll have made a new friend.
The mainly tourist cities are Hania, Hersonnasis, and Malia with Hania being more for the family crowd.
So go, have fun and learn a new culture.
