| bienstock's Full Review: Zürich |
I lived in Zurich for about a year and a half and had the opportunity to sample all of the sights and restaurants. Without a doubt, it is one of the most beautiful locations in the world...I hope that you have the opportunity to experience what I consider to be a truly special city...
The following represents a list of musts for those that are planning to visit Zurich. If you have not already made reservations, I would suggest that if possible, you should try to visit in May or June. The end of spring is, in my opinion, the perfect time of year to experience Europe...
Now, without further adieu, here are some of my favorite restaurants offering Swiss fare, with brief descriptions:
+ Kropf - a fantastic, traditional beer hall dining experience, located right off of the Paradeplatz (The Zeughauskeller, directly across from Kropf is the better known, "touristy" beer hall...Kropf is the one you need to try)
+ Vorderer Sternen - an excellent, reasonably priced restaurant that offers traditional Swiss cuisine...be sure to try the wienerschnitzel (breaded veal cutlet) and the roasted chicken...if you want to save some money, you can grab a quick bite at the Sternen Grille, which is run by the restaurant and has the very same chicken at half the price available for takeout or to be eaten in the Sternen Grille's small tent
+ Kronenhalle - very expensive...the typical choice of American businessmen on expense accounts...the art collection is tremendous and the service impeccable (located at Bellevue)
+ Rosaly's - hip, happening place located near Bellevue...a slightly more eclectic menu...a favorite is the chas-spatzli with applesauce....
Here are some of the best, and lesser known, sites to visit if you have a few days...
+ The Uetliberg - a small mountain in Zurich...easily accessible by train, or if you seek a challenge, rent a bicycle (available at low cost from the Hauptbahnhof, the main train station) and ride up for an awe-inspiring view and a great beer at one of two small restaurants at the top
+ Museum Rietberg - the finest Asian focused museum in Europe...located on Gablerstrasse...the adjoining park is a great location for a relaxing walk on a nice day
+ Aldstadt (Old Town) - be sure to take a stroll through the lovely old town area of Zurich...a convenient five minute walk from the train station...be sure to walk down some of the charming alleys where you will find an array of interesting boutiques and shops
If you have any specific questions regarding Zurich, please leave a comment and I will be happy to respond...all in all, Zurich may not have the pull of some of the other European cities, but it is well worth a visit and its central location makes it an ideal starting point for day and weekend trips to other destinations throughout Western Europe...
