I am the child of a Holocaust survivor. I grew up with knowledge of the six million Jews who lost their lives in this horror. I was older when I learned of the others. I was not looking particularly looking forward, therefore, to another Holocaust reiminscence experience. The experience at the Museum of Tolerance, however, was unique for me.
The Museum of Tolerance, as a place funded by and run by the Jewish community, does emphasize the Holocaust. It does not, however, isolate its message to this one period. The Museum of Tolerance includes presentations on current discrimination in the world and past struggles against people who are less than tolerant. I would strongly recommend people who are in the Los Angeles area visit this museum. It is not just another Holocaust Memorial, though it uses the Holocaust to demonstrate how hatred can grow and develop.
Remember that the museum is closed on Shabbat (Saturdays) and on some Jewish holidays. It will also close early on the day before certain Jewish holidays. If you don't know what holidays might be coming up, you can always call the museum and check its hours. Otherwise, just check the internet for a Jewish calendar.
I can't say you will enjoy the experience of the museum. It is nearly certain, however, that you will be moved by it.
