I didn't venture out very far, but there were people in snorkel masks in water about two feet deep. I think they were learning to breathe through masks.

Anini is indeed a GREAT place for swimming (my personal favorite on Kauai) and in general is very safe (though you do still need to stay away from the break in the reef - the currents are strong there). When we were there snorkeling in March of 2000, I did see some interesting fish, particularly a bit further out where there is more coral.

Nice review. I appreciate the advice in riptides. There are many dangerous beaches in my area and I had no idea what to expect.
