| CriticMan's Full Review: Montana |
My family and I had the privledge of visiting Montana last summer during one of our annual cross-country road trips. I have never visited a place quite as beautiful. There is nothing like driving along the highway and looking out at the horizon of green mountain ranges of the southwestern part of the state to the breath taking praries near Billings. As you look out on the horizon, you never thought the sky could stretch so far. Its like nothing else I have ever expeirenced.
Another thing, the scenery aside, that I really loved about Montana was that their was so much to do. We decided just to hit the major points of the state since we only could allow ourselves a week to explore this marvelouse state.
Who can forget the all-famous Yellowstone National Park where you can go and see the bears being fed out of the back of trucks? This place truly is amazing. Its full of all different types of wild life. The bears come right up to your car. I only have one suggestion about the surrounding area of the park. The gas, lodging, and food prices can get rather high since there is no other town for miles. The park is what their eceonomy thrives on.
Another thing that I would recommend doing while in Montana is white river rafting. There are hundreds of these places around the Billings area. We had two and half hours of fun on Beartooth Whitewater for just $30!
One place I would deffenetly go and visit if you are planning a trip to Montana any time soon is the Red Lodge, located an hours drive from Billings. This has to be the highlight of my trip. There is so much to do and see that we couldnt get it all done in the day we spent there! Outside the town their is some wonderful fishing, hiking, and camping sites. One thing that you must do while visiting Red Lodge is take a walk along Glacier Lake. Its beautiful! Another thing that you must do while visiting this wonderful town is take the time to just wonder around Broadway. The quaint little shops and restaraunts are very unique.
If its history you are looking for, there are plenty of places you can visit (i.e. Philips) but one place you must visit is Helena, Montanas Capital. The Montana Historical Museum, the Old Govenors Mansion, The Cathedral of St. Helena, the Old Govenors Mansion, and Last Chance Gulch (which has historical buildings and history on gold mining.)
Another great place to visit to expeirence the history of Montana is Butte. One place I would deffenetly recommend visiting in Butte is Cooper King Mansion. It gives you and idea of what life was like in the town back in the mining days. You can also take a trolley tour of the town to learn a little bit more history about it. They also have a Museum of Mining which is a must see.
Deer Lodge was another town I really enjoyed in Montana. Since my whole family are car buffs, we really enjoyed the Towe Car Museum. Another thing that I found really interesting was the Montana Territory State Prison. This was really neat! You can take a tour of the prison.
Last, but deffenetly not least, we have the marvelous town of Billings. There is so much to do and see here! It is a bussling Metropolitan city, yet it still offers the old country style living. It is the largest city in Montana witha population of a little under 100,000 people. Being withing a days drive from Yellowstone National Park, Grand Trenton, and Glacier National Park, Billings is in the middle of it all! Since I was only there for a half day, I only got to visit the Billings Zoo. I wish I had had more time because there was so much more to do!
Montana is not for every body. There are parts of the state that are very isolated. If that is what you are looking for in a vacation, however, Montana is the place for you! Give it a try, it will be a trip you wont ever forget!
