| Rocketgirl's Full Review: Red Rock Canyon |
If you're visiting Las Vegas, be sure to visit nearby Red Rock Canyon. It is easy to find, just drive on Charleston Avenue and keep going west. You will think that you have driven off into a dead-end in the desert, but keep going; you will arrive at the entrance to Red Rock Canyon. There is a minimal fee at the gate to the area.
Be sure to visit the visitor's center first, before taking the scenic 13-mile drive. The road is one-way only and you won't be able to come back to the visitor center without taking the entire drive then looping back around on the main road. The visitor center has some interesting exhibits on the flora and fauna in the area, the geology that makes up these beautiful sandstone and granite formations, and pioneers in the area. There is a video show and hand-held tape-recorded wands for the visually impaired. Immediately outside the building is an enclosed area, in which the center has created a tortoise rehabilitation area.
Once you start the scenic drive, go SLOW. You won't want to miss anything. The first and main feature of the park is appropriately called the Calico Hills. It is an appropriate name because the hills are multi-colored. With all the folds and stripes the hills almost look soft. But they are hard, hard enough for climbing. The hills are a popular rock-climbing area. There are other hiking trails, some in the back country, that are also popular hiking and backpacking areas. There is much wildlife in the park, and visitors see an occasional wild burro. There are also beautiful wildflowers and cactus. But my favorite feature, after the rock structures, are the Joshua Trees. They are such an interesting looking plant, not a true tree, but a member of the lily family. I'd love to have them in my garden, if I only lived further south!
Don't let the dazzle of Las Vegas blind you! Stop by Red Rock Canyon during the day, hit the casinos at night!
