| audra26's Full Review: The Strip |
my husband, his friend, and I went to Vegas for the first time about 2 months ago, so it was a new experience for all of us.
we stayed at the Mirage, my husband and I bumped our standard room up to a deluxe for an additional 50 bucks a night. his friend stayed with the standard room which was almost just like ours... only difference is that we were at the top of the hotel (you need a special key to ever get on our elevator, and at night there are gaurds there that check your key card to make sure that you are allowed onto the fancier elevator that takes you up to the deluxe rooms/suites.
like I said, his room looked like ours, but while he had a standard bathroom, we had a jaccuzi tub, stand-up glass shower, two sinks, and a vanity area/stool. the bathroom was huge and luxurious... the highlight of our stay :)
Our favorite casino was the Bellagio, it was less crowded during the day, bright with gold and cream colors, so it was very airy, open, warm, and inviting. their were tons of machines so you had your pick. and the machines seemed to payoff I won 64 on a quarter slot machine after only 1 minute of play-time. and my husband's friend won 200 on a roulette slot machine in like about 10-15 minutes of playtime. all he did was bet a lot of money on red or black (mostly black)
the mirage casino was small, crowded, dark, and a little creepy (like someone's basement) but we loved it, and felt as if we were coming home after a long day of walking the strip.
the Venetian casino was literally in the basement stairs, elevators, and escalators helped you get down to it. it seemed to have an identity crisis, gold, cream, luxury colors of the Bellagio, greek looking statues/decor like Caesar's, and a rinky-dink basement feeling like the Mirage... it didn't pull any of them off very well and just ended up with the feeling of a cheesey, tacky casino.
the Caesar was by far the best all around... and upkept so well that you'd hardly know that it was one of the oldest on the strip. it had almost everything you'd want... a ton of shopping, and a beautiful, extravagant, and large casino. if we go back, we will probably stay there.
the Bellagio was interesting... a little small. the lake/pond outfront was impressive, and though we only saw the fountains from the distance it was a breath taking sight to behold.
the Paris was interesting, and pretty... but after visiting the Caesar; just like the Venetian the Paris fell short in comparison.
MGM was the only other casino on the strip (that we had been to) that was large, extravagant, and interesting... lots to see and do.
Harrah's was cheap and dirty.... it had a hillbilly, Nashville theme to it, so Harrah's was kinda like the trashy casino on the strip. we didn't go to the Flamingo, Planet Hollywood, Rio, TI, or the Wynn... we stayed for 3 1/2 days and still didn't see everything...
it was the beginning of sept 2007 when we went and it was about 95 degrees. so it was hot and a little unbearable. the constant walking blistered my feet. the expense of it all gave me a headache.
my husband demanded that we see a "cool" show called "Ka" at the MGM. we bought the tickets that day from the Mirage conceirge. two tickets to "KA" was $150.00 each for a total of $300.00... I thought, "for this money, it is gonna be GREAT!"
well, not exactly. the story was cool a young prince and princess are seperated when they are attacked and their parents (the king and queen) are killed. then the story splits into two perspectives the young prince's adventure and him falling in love with his parent's killer's daughter. and the princess's adventure and her story of falling in love with a brown haired fabio swinging on a vine in a diamond glittery body suit/ thong... it was weird.. some of the effects were cool like the swimming under water scene. some were lame, like the 15 min long shawdow pupet scene.
the beginning was too busy, too fast... the middle was steady, interesting, and the end was long... almost as if they felt (we charged so much for the tickets we better stretch the show out as long as possible) I was falling asleep, so was my husband... I left the show not thinking "Wow, that was a cool show" even though it was, but I left saying, "God, we spent THAT much money for THAT?!?!" it's not that the show was bad or disappointing, it was that it was just way too overpriced. they should have thrown in a bottle of bubbly, or a dinner or something.
moving on to the buffets, we heard that the Paris buffet was good, and took a special monorail ride to the Paris for a breakfast, but it was waaay to crowded and the line was about an hour wait.. so we decided against it.
our 2nd night there we ate at the craving's buffet in the Mirage. it was better then expected. the price for dinner was about $19/person and there was a little bit of everything including terrific tasting shrimp and Alaskan crab claws yummy.
we ate lunch at the Bellagio buffet for about $20/person
it was a more upscale buffet, with flan, polenta, orzo pasta, lamb, etc. it had a smaller selection of great tasting, upscale food. while the cravings had more of a selection of equally great tasting, but lower scale food.
both buffets were good, both expensive... but I liked the cravings better :)
anyways, the strip was cool, and we will have to go back for another week (during cooler months) to see some more of what we missed the first time around.
