For travelers who like to eat off the beaten path, Top Notch in north Austin offers a little bit of Austin nostalgia with quite a bit of good people, good burgers, shakes, and fried chicken to make it well worth stopping in.
Top Notch has been in business for at least 30+ years, and they still keep on ticking. The employees there have been there for quite some time, so you hardly feel as if you are eating in a run-of-the-mill chain restaurant with some fly-by-night worker taking your order. If you don't feel like coming in, you can pull up to their curbside intercoms, and they will bring your food right out.
The food is tasty with the burgers grilling right before your very eyes as you place your order. Some of their burgers include a hickory burger and a chili burger, and they are flexible enough to where you can essentially build your own burger with anything they have on the menu. They also serve baskets of fried chicken, and the chicken is crispy and juicy with tons of flavor. Their fries, although not homemade, and shakes, which are actually mixed in much the same fashion as you would see at Dairy Queen are much better than what the franchises offer. If you are on a diet or are trying to watch your fat intake, there are no salads to be had on the menu. The healthiest meal they offer would be a grilled chicken sandwich.
The atmosphere and decor is well-kept but untouched. Pictures of sponsored soccer teams adorn the walls of the order area that contains dark brick walls with red booths and vinyl covered chairs placed in the dining room. Even the sign at the street is original bringing visitors back to the pre Michael Dell era. It's no wonder that Rich Linklater (a fellow Austinite and movie director) felt it appropriate to film some of the scenes from Dazed and Confused just outside of Top Notch's doors.
