| armadillo55's Full Review: Texas Hill Country |
Living in the hill country of Texas we enjoy the best of both world's. Whenever the quiet scenery around us starts being taken for granted we can load up the car and head into the live music capitol of the world in Austin or cruise straight down IH-10 into San Antonio for the best Mexican food on the planet.
Most people "in the know" let the tourist's and military brat's wait in line at Margarita's in Old Market Square but take it from a true Texas road warrior, it is worth the 30 yard walk down to the original restaurant (owned by the same folks as Margarita's) to MI TIERRA. Once inside you'll experience the real tradition and hospitality that is unique to San Antonio starting with the Mexican bakery. Every kind of Mexican pastry you ever dreamed of right in front of your eye's before you are seated is plenty to get your appetite in gear! Notice the wall's in the back part of the dining area where huge mural's depicting the history of the restaurant and S.A. are colorfully painted. If you want the best sour cream chicken enchilada's in the world then wait in line at Margarita's. Mi Tierra's is where you go for the rest of the menu. The Mariachi's are top-notch as are the authentic servings of: cabrito, enchilada's, flauta's and chalupa's.
Looking for authentic Mexican food in San Antonio can be fun. Two of the best and most ecomomical places I've found were: Piedras Niegras de Noche and Blanco Cafe. For the best beef enchilada's in town try Blanco Cafe just west of San Pedro two blocks south of Hildebrand on Blanco. Some of the best Tejano music you'll ever hear is on their jukebox also. The full dinner plate of beef enchilada's will cost about 5 dollars. A great bargain for a wonderfully prepared meal. Seat yourself or you may have to wait because this place stay's busy!
One of my favorite stops is Piedras Niegras de Noche which is located off of IH-10 past downtown. Take the Laredo exit and turn left under the overpass half a block on the right behind a pizza hut. (If you cross the tracks you passed it) Piedras Niegras is very unique in that they serve Mango ice cream from the Manger Hotel that is custom made at the Hotel. It is wonderful! You'll love the somewhat smaller portion's served here and I like the smaller prices, too! Most plates and dinner's are priced around 5 dollars. Very friendly atmosphere and upstairs dining provide's plenty of room and no waiting! This place is worth the extra effort to find and you'll be glad you ordered the Mango ice cream.
After enjoying Sea World, Fiesta Texas, the Alamo, the Missions and the Riverwalk you'll want to enjoy some of the best Mexican food in the world in San Antonio, Texas. Hook 'em Horns!
