Review Topic: Practical Information
From other reviews you can gather DC is a must-see city. With the landscaping, architecture, history, no skyscrapers to block the light, green grassy parks, museums and sites for reflection and remembrance, phewww, who would ever want to leave. Myself, I live in CT and would move there in a heartbeat, except that I left out one thing, traffic! Ahhh, not for the faint of heart!
For tourists and travelers, DC's traffic can be avoided by the clean Metro-Subway system. And the highways after rush hour (8pm) aren't bad, and probably are all right during the mid-day. The highways in this area are immense, 4 or 5 lanes in each direction. But the volume of traffic is so large that it crawls along, turning a 20 minute drive after 8pm in the evening into a 2 hr drive at 5pm. My casual nights out after training in DC on a recent trip where so fatiguing that I just wanted to go home. And everywhere I went I had a good time. It was just so hard to get there that it didn't seem worth it.
I've never lived here, but there is a lot going for the area if you you're a Northeasterner. The weather avoids the snow, spring comes early, fall runs late, the area still has some rolling farmland in Maryland and south into Virginia. I'm not a nightlife person but we went to Old Alexandria one night, just outside of DC and it was fun all night long. Lots of places to eat, lots of young people and lots of laughing.
Downtown is accessible by the Metro rather easily. If you are coming into town, I would recommend staying at a hotel on the Metro lines. Then you can spend more time enjoying and less time waiting in DC.
