Universal Studios Orlando a great park for everyone
We visited Universal Orlando in August 2007. This was my first time at Universal, my husband went once before but that was a few years ago. We also brought along our 2 year old son.
The main reason we chose to go to Universal Studios was because our son is very much into Barney right now. After doing extensive research I found out that Universal Orlando is the only place where you can see Barney (with the exception of a live show).
We purchased an unlimited pass that was good for 7 days. It allowed unlimited entrance for 7 days to Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure. The passes cost about $89 each. We did not have to buy a pass for our son because children 2 and under are free. I thought this was a great deal. And unlike the Disney passes you are not restricted to just one park a day, if you wanted to visit either parks or just City Walk you can.
When you first walk into Universal Studios its like the set of a movie on Hollywood. There is a very large souvenirs store just steps from the entrance. Right outside this store some Nickelodeon characters wait to take pictures. I was able to take a picture with Dora the Explorer (my son was sleeping) and Jimmy Neutron was there also.
Just past the store is the Spongebob ride. We did not go on the ride but in the store when you get off the ride, Spongebob himself is there to take pictures. I didnt know thats where Spongebob is until we were leaving Universal so we never got to take pictures with him.
We did go on the Shrek 4-D ride. My son was able to go on this ride also. It was a fun and cute ride. It felt nice to get splashed with some water during the ride. After the ride, Shrek, Donkey and Fiona are there waiting to take pictures with you.
We had lunch in the Monsters Café. I personally do not like horror movies (my husband loves them), but I could still appreciate the décor. Everything was related to some horror movie, whether it was Frankenstein, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, and others. When you are on line waiting to get your food it looks like you are in a lab. The food was standard, burgers, pizza, salads.
The Back to the Future ride was taken down. The Delorian car was still there but the ride itself was taken down to make way for a new Simpsons ride that is set to open late 2007 or 2008. I was very disappointed that I was not able to go on that ride. I know Back to the Future is old now, but it would have been nice to go on.
I had no desire to go on the Men In Black Ride. Thankfully so because the line to go on was crazy. We did go into the Men In Black giftshop. Im not a big fan of aliens so I wasent too impressed.
We kept missing the Beatlejuice show. Everytime we were in that area the show had just started. I would have like to have seen it because my husband told me its pretty good.
There is always a line to take your picture with the shark from Jaws. I did the typical thing and stuck my head in the sharks mouth (just like thousands of other people doing the same thing).
We also went on the Terminator ride. It was good. I also have not seen any of the Terminator movies but still enjoyed the ride. My son was able to go on this ride also. He also like to wear the 3-D glasses, he thought they were funny.
Our favorite section of Universal was Woody Woodpeckers Kid Zone. The Barney show was so adorable. Baby Bop and BJ are there in the show also. And you can take your picture with Barney at the end of the show. There is also a play area for kids when you exit the show. My son was having so much fun in this area, we had a hard time getting him to do anything else.
Other characters in this area waiting to take pictures with you are Woody Woodpecker, Winnie Woodpecker, Curious George and the guy with the yellow hat, Scooby Doo, Shaggy, and the rest of the characters from Scooby Doo.
There was also an animal show. It was really cute. They have animals there that have been used in movies and TV and have them perform different tricks. The show lasts about 25 minutes but it really is a cute show. Everyone enjoyed it.
The ET ride is still there, we didnt get to go on it, I would have liked to but I also didnt feel like waiting on line for hours.
We spent a lot of time in the arcade area. They have a decent amount of games to play. It was always crowded, especially when there were the common late afternoon Florida showers.
When we were there they were filming a live show of TNA wrestling. We would have like to see it but you had to be 18 and older and we didnt have anyone to watch our son. The cool thing about that is that if you were lucky to go to a live show that they are filming, you dont have to pay anything extra, the price is included with your admission.
Overall, it was a good time. Next time I go it will not be in August, it was brutally hot. Everyone will have a good time, there is something for everyone to like at Universal Orlando.
