No trip to Tucson would complete without a trip to the Desert Museum. My parents live in Tucson and I have made several visits. On every single visit I have made the trip out to the Desert Museum. The name is very misleading. It is not a museum, it is a zoo. It is located in the outskirts of Tucson and the drive out is nothing short of amazingly beautiful. The drive from the city is about twenty minutes and there are several ways go. I would recommend going a different way on the way there and on the way back. I simply cannot express how enjoyable the drive alone is.
The Desert Museum specializes in animals and insects that are native to the Sonora Desert. There are a couple of exhibits that have animals that are not native to the desert, but I would say about 95% of the animals are native. For example I do not think there are any African Lions in the desert. The most wonderful thing is that the museum is set in natural settings, not right in the city.
Admission to the museum is fair, about $10 for an adult. Food, beverages, and ice cream are also very reasonably priced. I never went in the gift shop because I normally steer clear of those sorts of things.
The exhibits were all wonderfully kept and the thing that was most impressive is that many were natural settings. My favorite exhibit was the prairie dogs. They had this prairie dog hill with all sorts of tunnels running through it. The Prairie Dogs were so close you could touch them. The coyote exhibit was also impressive. It was amazing how well they blended in with their natural environment. You could be looking right at one and not even see it. The javelina enclosure was amazing as well. Javelinas are these wild boar looking things that smell bad. But they are quite enjoyable to watch. The reptile house is also a favorite stop. One of the most popular portions of the museum is an area known as Cat’s Canyon. It is a series of exhibits featuring mountain lions, jaguars, cougars, ect….
Any time is a good time to make a trip out to the Desert Museum. You should, however, keep in mind that in the summer temperatures can exceed 100 degrees. So a couple bottles of water and some sunscreen would be a wise investment. I highly recommend giving it a try should the opportunity arise.
