| TayleyJ98's Full Review: Audubon Institute Aquarium of the Americas |
My family went to New Orleans on a weekend trip with no real plans. My husband and I had been to the aquarium before the kids were born, but we didn't remember much about it. After parking (which ended up costing about $8.00 for the whole day, not bad...) we listened to our kids excitedly chattering about the outward appearance of the building and we were glad we came. The huge riverboats, friendly people, and pleasant November weather all combined to create an enchanting atmosphere.
The prices are incredibly reasonable. Our family of four spent about $40.00 to get in. The aquarium is broken up into sections which flow naturally into each other. I think it took us about 1 1/2 to 2 hours to see everything. When you first come in, you walk under and through a giant aquarium that arches over the walkway. There is a section for the Pacific Coast, Gulf Coast, and other areas. The tropical section was fun, with a waterfall, parakeets, and plenty of fish to see. The kids loved standing inches away from sharks. My favorite section was probably the sea horses. I never knew how many varieties there were! I actually saw a pregnant (male) one. My kids' favorite part was the sea otter section. They were fun to watch! They actually play with toys!
My husband loved the jellyfish area. There were several tanks which were illuminated so beautifully that the jellies actually glowed with brilliant light. We watched sharks feed, sting rays glide gracefully by, and an albino alligator sleep on a dock. We touched starfish, sharks, and fish scales. There is also an Imax theater, but we didn't go this time. We were having too much fun in the aquarium! Almost 2 hours slipped by without our noticing. When we were through, we spent the rest of the day exploring the French Quarter. It was wonderful, and we plan to go back soon. (We only live about 3 hours away!) I would recommend this trip to anyone.
