| kari_t's Full Review: Audubon Institute Aquarium of the Americas |
Last summer's family vacation found us in New Orleans. An unexpected stop, along our way to Baton Rouge. I pulled out the trusty AAA tour-book and found the Aquarium Of The Americas listed in New Orleans. A quick family vote and we were on our way. The aquarium was relatively easy to find. The parking was not the best but the walk was not bad.
This was our first time to visit an aquarium other than at the city zoo. Just left after the entering was a "tunnel" to walk through. It was actually a large aquarium with a built-in walkway. The kids stopped in that walkway and watched as all kinds of aquatic life swam up to and then over us. There was even a place where the kids could stick there heads up into a bubble and have a 360 degree view of the "seabed" and above.
There was an entire room devoted to jellyfish. They were absolutely beautiful. One exhibit had an extremely large jellyfish floating in a sea of blue. There was some kind of special light on these exhibits to create a breathtaking royal blue background. I could have stayed in this room all day.
Another area displayed animals and birds. One of my children's favorite exhibits was the white albino alligator. He looked very stately sunning on his "dock". They were also beautifully colored exotic birds. My husband used nearly a whole roll of film while we were there.
They also have a 3D theatre which is not included in the price of admission. There were different "movies" to choose from and I believe those are changed periodically. The one we saw was underwater. My kids kept reaching out in front of them to grab the seaweed, kelp amd little fish.
Anyone who visits New Orleans should devote some time to the Aquarium of the Americas. It is beautiful and educational too. We spent about 3 hours there. I would suggest at least that much time to see everything. Had we not needed to hit the road again, it would have been another hour or so there. And if you live in or nearby New Orleans, you must take advantage of this exceptional treat.
