The Bronx Zoo is located right in my hometown of Bronx, NY. It is only approximately two blocks away from my house, which is Fordham Road and Bronx River parkway. Since I have lived in Fordham Road all my life going to the Bronx Zoo was something I did at least once a month, especially with my family.
When it was first opened in November 8, 1899 I was not born yet (I am only 21 years old.) After doing some research I found out that the park was not always as big as it is today. Even growing up I saw major changes. The Bronx Zoo started off with only twenty-two exhibits and approximately eight hundred and forty-three animals. As of today because it consists of two hundred and sixty-five acres and over four thousand animals it is considered the largest wildlife conservation park in the United States.
Since 1929 unlike many other Zoo’s the Bronx Zoo has offered an educational program about all animal species to the public. This program has reached over a million schools throughout New York. I remember while I was attending elementary school and junior high school there was a trip to the Bronx Zoo at least twice a year. Children of all ages and from schools all over the New York area participate in the Bronx Zoo educational program.
For those who are animal lovers (as I am) I had a blast every time I went. It seemed no matter how many times I went I saw something different and would ended up loving it even more. The Bronx Zoo holds so much concern for their animals that by 1941 they were the first Zoo to remove all cages and exhibited the animals in their own natural habitats.
In recent years there has been an additional exhibit called the “African Rain Forest” where four hundred animals of many species are located. They also have veterinary, clinical medicine, pathology and nutrition departments to care for every animal.
The Bronx Zoo offers many wonderful opportunities to see and study these animals. It has done its job to provide all kinds of information for all species located there. They protect these animals and at the same time educated the public.
