This review is dedicated to the Klueg family. Our host, Klueger is holding this write-off for his lovely wife, ahlstromomy. The objective of the write-off is to write about something related to nature. So, this is my write-off submission about the Central Park Zoo & Wildlife Center...hope you enjoy it!
We were taking a walk and passed The Plaza hotel, New York City. Ahhh....yes. The beautiful hotel with such elegance. Too bad we werent staying there! So, we decided that we would stop drooling over the gorgeous hotel and take a walk in Central Park.
It was a freezing day outside, just a day before Christmas. Since it was so cold, we decided that we would grab a pretzel, then we would take a walk in the Central Park Zoo & Wildlife Center which had some buildings with heating in them.
Admission
New York City is known for high prices and for Broadway. Both mean that you need to be financially stable to go there. Well, I didnt feel like paying big bucks, so I made sure that the Central Park Zoo & Wildlife Center had fair prices. I was expecting it to be about $11-$12 per person, but how much wrong could I have gotten?
Adults: $3.50
Children 2-12: $.50
Senior Citizens: $3.00
Wow! The prices at this zoo are about 80% lower than the zoo near my house. I was very surprised that they were so low, but I guess New York City isnt always so tough on wallets.
Food
The Leap Frog Cafe is not so easy on wallets. This is the cafe located near the entrance of the zoo. It has salads, burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches and the sort, but everything was overpriced. Instead, we decided to eat at Burger Heaven down the street.
Animals
First, we went into a building that was very dark inside. This building had a few animals (and other creatures) behind solid glass windows. First, we saw bats. There they were flying around in their little cage. Some were hanging upside down from the small trees inside. We also saw leaf cutting ants. There were thousands of ants in this Antropolis tearing off leaves from tree limbs and cutting them up into thousands of small pieces!
From there, we went to the next part which had some weird type of animals. One was a Lion Tamarin which actually looked like a monkey more than a lion. It sat there looking at us and watching our every move. There were also these little birds that were like a chicken and peacock put together (if thats possible). We also saw two different types of snakes. One was a boa constrictor that was on the floor just laying there, and another was an anaconda that was camouflaged in the trees. Dont worry, all these animals are behind glass windows.
Next, we went to the bird exhibit which was in a huge indoor pavilion. Each section of the pavilion belong to each species of birds. There was a little plate that talked about each type of bird and showed a picture of each type. A lot of the birds were from different parts of the world. We even saw a toucan flying overhead. There was also some type of bird from Africa and even Australia!
Our next stop was the cold section. This section was where we saw animals that live in cold climates. First, we saw seals from a big glass window. You could see them swimming back and forth, and sometimes they would jump on the big chunks of ice and look at the crowd that would be viewing them from above. Polar bears were located in the tank next to it, but they were not there for some reason.
We also visited the penguin and puffin exhibit. We stood there from a downstairs viewing area and saw the penguins and puffins swim and stand on the icy surface above the water. There were over 100 of each type of animal. We saw the penguins waddling to the water, then they would jump in and start swimming very fast from one side of the tank to the other. The puffins didnt swim - instead they were flying all over the place.
The last stop was of the California Sea Lions. They were in an outside pool and in the middle was a small island where they would sometimes climb up on. While we were there, we were lucky enough to see them at their funniest moments. It was feeding time and they were starving! They knew it was time for food, so they kept on getting on the small island and started making weird sounds so the feeders would bring them their food. It was a very funny scene as they kept on whaling for food and would snort and sneeze.
My Thoughts
Central Park Zoo & Wildlife Center is amazing. The prices are ridiculously low, and go easy on everyones wallets. Knowing that New York City is a major tourist trap and Central Park is very popular, I would think that the prices would be higher. However, they are very low...I wish I could say the same for the zoo restaurant, Leap Frog Cafe.
People of all ages will enjoy this zoo. Not only is it cheap, but the exhibits are very interesting and sometimes funny to watch. Kids will like to watch the penguins, puffins, and seals while they are swimming. They will also enjoy the California Sea Lions at feeding time.
Adults will also enjoy the Central Park Zoo & Wildlife Center. The bird exhibit is interesting - its also romantic to hear birds from all over the world chirping. Also, adults may enjoy watching the penguins, puffins, and seals also. I certainly did, and I also enjoyed watching the California Sea Lions!
So if youre in New York City near The Plaza Hotel, or even FAO Schwartz (theyre right across from each other), take a walk to the Central Park Zoo & Wildlife Center. You will enjoy watching the animals, and of course, the low prices!
