| mforish's Full Review: Fort Wayne Children's Zoo |
As a Fort Wayne Resident for 18 years, from the time I was 4, I have enjoyed many visits to the Fort Wayne Children's Zoo, and I have watched it grow from a small animal display area to a fully fledged zoo with with not one, not two but THREE complete and unique regional habitat areas.
The original zoo area, centered around a small lake, has exhibits of animals mainly from North and South America, including many species of birds, monkeys of various kinds, a petting zoo with goats, deer, chickens and ducks, a science center, an aviary, pony rides, prairie dogs, and a lake full of goldfish and catfish. Oh, and watch out for the wandering ducks and peacocks!
The first expansion is the African Veldt. This area includes animals from the dark continent, ranging from cheetahs to giraffes, ostriches and zebras. The whole area is designed to simulate the wide open spaces of Africa, with the visitor trails taking the form of an enclosed wooden catwalk where you can observe the animals in safety while they enjoy the freedom of open land. You can also take a ride on the safari jeeps (a favorite of children) for an up-close and personal look at the wildlife, or climb the observation tower for a broad view of the populated landscape.
The second expansion is the Australian Adventure. Made up of several small exhibits featuring creatures from "down under", the Australian Adventure allows you to get a good look at kangaroos and wallabies, many Australian birds, tasmanian devils, and a number of other animals. The coolest areas here though, in my opinion, are the Coral Reef exhibit, which lets you see the undersea life that surrounds the continent, and the nocturnal exhibit, with bats and other night dwellers presented in a dark, cave-like environment. Top off your visit here with a ride on the slow-moving log ride through the Australian Adventure area - a great break for tired feet!
The newest addition to the zoo is the Indonesian Rainforest expansion. Beginning with a science center filled with small insects and reptiles from the rainforest, you get a feel for the rainforest right away. As you leave this building, you enter a simulated rainforest, which is very humid and absolutely crawling with tropical vegetation! Rainforest birds adorn this small bio-dome, and a warm mist swirls about, really capturing the feel of the rainforest. From there you move on to see the orangutan exhibit, with a number of large orangutans in a room with large vines, they are great fun to watch when the get active!
There is so much more to see at the Fort Wayne Children's Zoo, and it is well worth the visit, even if you don't have any Children, as it has many things to interest adults as well.
