| edgy01's Full Review: Mammoth Mountain |
It seems it's time again for a review of Mammoth Mountain. I skied it for a couple days about a month ago after not being there for over 30 years. The improvements to Mammoth are impressive. They have been paying attention to the complaints from yesteryear that the lines were excessive and the food tasteless on the hill.
MM has designed the mountain smartly today with high speed quads or triples in places where the crowd could potentially collect. Smart move. I never waited more than 6 minutes during a Friday or Saturday. (Compared to common 30 minute waits in 1973).
Grooming. The ratings that MM posts for the various runs are rather worst-case. With their newer grooming equipment (the most in North America) you just aren't going to get bogged down in too much powder if the groomers can get a few hour head start on you. They're even grooming the Cornice Bowl,--all the way to the top. What used to be a significant single Black Diamond is mow more like a Blue thanks to significant grooming. Just be prepared for a day when the snow is coming in and they don't get up there to groom it for you.
Prices are a bit steep, I recall it to be about $72 for an adult, all day, weekend. Buy the two day ticket for $122 if you can.
Snowboarder to skier ratio is about 60-40,--in favor of the boarders. With the vast expanse of MM there really isn't the typical 'imminent threat' feeling of conflict between boarders and skiers. There is a lot of room.
