I visited Breckenridge during the last part of January of 2000. I should state that this was my first time ever skiing and the first time I have ever seen more than a inch or two of snow at the same time! The group I traveled with (over 30 people) flew from Houston to Denver and chartered a bus into Breckenridge.
My trip lasted for three days of skiing, I wish it was more. I spent the first day trying to get over altitude sickness and the last day enjoying myself. Let me throw out a word of caution. I live less than 20 miles from the Gulf of Mexico, if you live at a low elevation I would at least look into some medication to deal with the altitude since Breckenridge base is about 9,000 feet above sea level!
As I said the first day I tried ski school but that just was not happening. The second day I found my instructor, Bob, very patient and very willing to work with our class. Trust me we needed this! The resort was quite busy and even though this was a Friday their was only six people in my class. Some members did not come back for the second half of class in the afternoon but I would suggest staying in class all day unless you have someone to work with you that afternoon. Practice really helps and don't get frustrated if you don't "get it" that first day.
By the third day of my trip I was comfortable going down greens and getting on and off the ski lift. Breckenridge is a big resort. I found myself staying on just a a handful of trails. This was ok with me since I was still working on my overall skill. Some people complain the resort is too big and they can't see everything on their visit. Good. I like to know that there is plenty that will still be new next time I go and I don't have to ski down the same trail over and over if I don't want to. There is plenty of easy to double black trails for all skiers.
The plus to a big resort is the fact there is a real town at the base of the mountain. This allows plenty of other things to do (shopping, eating etc.) if you are not skiing like when you are suffering altitude sickness. Another big plus is tha the town is very compact and it is easy to walk from just about anywhere.
I really enjoyed my trip to Breckenridge and would suggest it for both novices and experienced skiers alike. I do want to mention that snowboarding is very popular on all trails. If this is welcome to you great if not make you own judgement.
