My Husband & I went to Steamboat for our honeymoon 4 years ago and while a lot can change in that time I'm sure it's still the charming Western Ski town it was then. We stayed on the mountain for some fabulous ski in/ski out skiing. The abundance of ski in/ski out is exceptional. So many choices and it still doesn't ruin the ambiance of the mountain.
The mountain offers some exceptional tree skiing - giving you beauty and fun. My husband, who is an excellent skier had only one complaint..not enough steeps. While I don't search out the gut wrenching steeps my husband loves, I didn't find myself challenged enough on the days I wanted to be, which were only a couple. But that is the only con, if it can really be considered that. It has some killer bump runs that any bump enthusiast would enjoy. Lift lines were generally good, no more than a few minutes.
The snow base and conditions were fantastic. The "champagne powder" that Steamboat is known for was certainly present during our week, especially after the 82 inches we received after three days of continual snow! But truth be told, I found out that I really need to learn how to ski in all that thigh high powder, needless to say my husband was in his glory.
The apres ski is abundant, although being on our honeymoon we were selective;) Every restaurant we ate at was wonderful, an especially wonderful treat was at L'Apogee downtown. A wonderful continental restaurant with an extensive wine list. An awesome breakfast place we tried was Winona's, also downtown. However, there are enough places on and directly around the mountain that you need not venture downtown. But a trip to Steamboat without visiting it's charming town would be a loss for everyone. (Except perhaps the college kids who are not really into "charming!")
I can't say much about the family activities that Steamboat is also noted for, since we were sans children at the time. However, a very worthwhile excursion for one of those non-ski days, if you have any, is a trip to Strawberry Park Hot Springs. It's a natural hot spring, that you can arrange a trip to directly from Steamboat Village. It's a wonderful outdoor experience. Three different rock pools, at different temperatures nestled in the mountains, surrounded naturally by tons of snow, and beautiful pine trees. It's worth the trip.
We were there the first week of January which was college week then, so for all the college students that is the time to go. It was teeming with coeds.
I would go back to Steamboat someday, but before I do that I'm the type who likes to try out every where else first. It's a nice mountain, not my favorite, but the honeymoon aspect certainly puts it in a special place for me.
