I have been to Steamboat twice, once with just my parents and the other time with my friends and my parents. I thoroughly enjoyed it and thought it was well worth it. I am pretty much an intermediate skier and I don't do a whole lot of black diamonds, I do mainly blues. If you just want something for the kids or for people who aren't too good at skiing I would definately recommend this resort because it has a lot of long trails that aren't that hard to make it down.
There were a bunch of trails on the mountain that I really had fun on. A couple of them that I that were really great were Why Not, and Tomahawk. Tomahawk was really fun because it was wide and fast without requiring a whole lot of skill.
Steamboat is a rather crowded place and has a lot of little kids skiing around it so you have to watch out for them. This is one of the things that I didn't like about the resort because I would be racing my friends down a mountain and all of the sudden some little kid would ski right out in front of me which would cause me to have to swerve and I would end up doing a face plant into the snow with my gear flying everywhere.
One tip I would like to share with you is that if you are someone who just skis to have fun and has no intention of breaking the men's downhill world record I would suggest that you don't go with anyone who is too serious about skiing. My experience with going with someone like this wasn't as fun as it could have been. Because that person will think of it as trying to get to the bottom of the hill as fast as possible so that they can get on the next lift and get 5 more runs in before the end of the day. And this person won't ever smile and won't want to have any fun. As long as you don't end up going with someone who is like that you should have a great time.
