I joined 24 Hour Fitness several years ago at the Van Ness location in San Francisco, CA.
The things I liked about the gym when I joined:
1: It was a convenient location. Centrally located, I could work out on the way to/from work and even walk to the gym if I had the time.
2: They have a good mixture of equipment and free weights. This particular gym has two floors. Cardio on the first and weights/equipment on the 2nd.
3: 24 Hour has locations across the West. I travel for work and like to work out on my business trips. The extra money I pay for my monthly membership is less expensive than paying for day passes at a gym when I travel.
In the last 2 years, as 24 Hour has grown, I have noticed a significant change in the way the clubs are maintained and run. It has made me decide to leave 24 Hour Fitness and join another club. I am not alone. Several of my friends are also leaving. In addition, every time I go, I overhear locker room conversations in which those people are leaving 24 Hour Fitness too.
The reasons why you should NOT JOIN 24 HOUR FITNESS or why you should END YOUR MEMBERSHIP AT 24 HOUR FITNESS:
1: The locker rooms are filthy. The floors are never clean. One can literally see the dirt. Don't go bare foot in the locker room.
2: The showers are filthy. Hair clogs the drains. Grout is black from mold. The floors again, are brown from the dirt.
3: The maintenance is non existent. The showers in the men's room are always breaking down. Recently, the tiles came off the ceiling of the last stall and they just put up a board to keep people from using it. That was two months ago. The day it happened, the staff did not sweep up the broken tile, which had reached across the shower room.
At any given time, there are several weight machines out of order. At any given time, there are even more cardio machines out of order.
This includes machines with "Maintenance in Progress" signed posted to them. However, we have learned that these signs actually mean "OUT OF ORDER, DON'T KNOW WHEN WE'LL GET TO FIXING IT". Other machines have no sign posted, but do not work.
4: The "Trainers" are not certified and don't know what they are doing. When I first joined, my "Trainer" had a gut! The other day, a "Trainer" was instructing a woman on lat pull downs improperly. If she had followed his instructions, she would have risked injury to her upper back and neck.
NEVER HIRE A 24 HOUR FITNESS TRAINER if you value your health.
5: The staff are Salespeople and don't care about anything else. If you bring an issue to their attention that does not bring additional revenue into the company, they will not express any interest.
The staff are not instructors. The staff are not Trainers. They are not Customer Service Agents. They are Sales people.
I once saw a female come to the staff to tell them that a MAN had just come out of the WOMAN's shower area when she was at her locker. (He was not a maintenance crew member or staff member). The staff behind the counter just said "really!" with a smile and showed no concern for the woman's safety. I would not let any woman I know join this gym.
I have since learned that all of these CONS about 24 Hour Fitness are not unique to this location. Every location I visit is the same. Dirty, poorly maintained, and poorly staffed.
