If you are like me, you want the body from the commercial but spend as little time as possible in the gym. Don't get me wrong, i love the feeling you get after a good workout, but dragging myself to the gym three times a week is quite the battle. Being a member of Ballys makes this battle slightly harder to win. Please remember that I speak of Ballys in NYC and Brooklyn,at peak times(before and after work). My typical workout three times a week is An hour of aerobics, and about 45 minutes of weight training. My typical time spent in the gym at ballys was three hours. I will now explain why. To get into a popular aerobics class, such as a 7:30pm step class, You must sign your name to a list, and cannot do it over the phone, which means you must line up at 6:30 to get onto the list. Then, you will usually see one argument at the beginning of the class because there is no room for someone who signed up. Lets say you don't get into a class, and you want to use a treadmill or exercise bike, well bring a magazine, because you will be waiting on line for about 15-20 minutes to get onto one. WEIGHT TRAINING each machine, including mat space for sit ups, has a line at least three deep. This is frustrating because if you are like me, you get into a groove and don't want to take that much time between sets.
The people. i am not a gym socialite, by any stretch. i wear a walkman and mind my business. if you like to chat That is fine. My problem was that it was that ballys also doubles as a dating service of sorts because people on the machines were picking eachother up and, in turn, taking much longer on the machines.
Free weights.. One set of each size. you also must sign a list to get those, or wait on yet another line.
While the price of the gym membership was unbeatable($13/month) I had to give it up for a more expensive and less crowded gym, and have never regretted it.
The one thing I will say in Ballys favor, is that they do have state of the art equipment. you just have to wait a while to get on it.
