| tnts_mom's Full Review: Atkins Diet |
I tried the Atkins diet by my own doctor's recommendation. I went to him for advice on losing weight. I have always watched my fat and calorie grams closely, but was still gaining weight even with exercise. In a word I was fustrated. After the battery of tests showed there was nothing wrong with me, my doctor suggested a "new way of eating" is how he put it. He further explained how some people might have food allergies the their weight masks. At this point I was willing to try anything short of medications and radical surgery to take the weight off.
You eat unlimited protein portions and limit your carbohydrates to 20 grams of leafy green vegetables or low carbohydrate vegetables from an approved list of "induction " foods. After 2 weeks at the 20 gram carbohydrate level you slowly add more carbohydrates back into your diet( veggies, grains, nuts fruits)until you stop losing weight and you back off the the amount of carbohydrates your body can handle and still lose weight.
I noticed results right away. I wasn't hungry all the time since the added protein and fat kept me satisfied longer, plus it helped keep my blood sugar at a constant level which helped keep me more alert. During the 2 week induction phase I lost 14lbs. Over the next year and a half I took off 90 more pounds and I am still losing today. I am at 153lbs now, but wish to get in the 130's to be in the height/weight charts without being overweight.
Many people think there are risks involved in this diet. I tell them to try it for two weeks and see for themselves. Very few people who actually follow the Atkins diet as described in Dr Atkins book have had any sort of troubles while on this diet. Kidney troubles are the big issue in most people's books. As long as you drink the recommended amount of water ketones(fat) will flush out of your system without harm. In the latest edition of Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution he devotes a chapter to answering this misconceptions.
I am planing on staying on this way of eating for life. Many of Dr Atkins critics are now supporting some low carbohydrate program or ideas. It only proves that this does work and is healthy. Dr Atkins himself has been on his own diet since the 1960's!
I recommend this program for anyone who has trouble losing weight, or is worried about becoming diabetic, feels tired after eating high carb meals or becomes hungry soon after eating. This program is the answer to your prayers and weight problems.
