| carrmela's Full Review: Carbohydrate Addict's Diet |
I started on the Carbohydrate Addicts diet after seeing the married doctors, Richard and Rachel Heller on the Oprah show. They have both had weight problems and Rachel Heller once weighed 300 pounds. When they explained the symptoms of carb addiction, I recognized myself. I knew that if I ate breakfast I was ravenous by lunchtime and if I skipped breakfast, I didn't get hungry until much later. I was eating bagels or toast and jelly for breakfast which are carbs and that's what was triggering the hunger. There are other symptoms too which you can check yourself at the website, Carbohydrate Addicts.com
The Carbohyrdrate Addicts program limits the amount of carbs that you eat and so your insulin levels stay low. Every time you eat carbs, your body releases insulin to process it. Excess insulin leads to fat. By allowing carbs to be eaten only once a day, it limits the body's release of insulin to once a day rather than all day long.
On this program, two meals a day contain protein and low carb vegetables, and the third meal, called the Bonus Meal, allows you to eat the carbs that you have missed. After starting with a salad, you should a plate containing 1/3 protein, 1/3 low carb vegetables and 1/3 high carbs which can be either starchy vegetables, bread, pasta or dessert. If you get seconds on anything, you must get equal portions of the other two.
Most people find breakfast the most difficult meal, especially if they are used to eating cereal, bagels, doughnuts, etc. No problem for us because we love bacon and eggs, scrambled in butter, no less and it's all okay on this program. How painful is that?
Honestly, my husband and I usually ate way more than the 1/3 carbs that the diet recommended during the bonus meal and we have still lost a total of 80 pounds. I started 16 months ago and my husband 12 months ago and we are still on it. I plan to be on this program forever. It is the easiest thing I have ever done. I have dieted off and on since a teenager and have never been able to stick to anything this long because of the deprivation of all other diets.
My husband is a runner and he felt great running, so this program gives you plenty of energy for participating in sports.
I have also tried the Atkins diet which is similar in some ways, but allows only such a tiny amount of carbohydrates that you feel totally deprived. I couldn't stick to that more than two weeks. In the latest revision of the book, Atkins even mentions the carbohydrate addicts book and says that if you absolutely must eat carbs, then the Hellers ideas are the best to follow.
I used to be a sugar addict. I craved it and felt like I could climb the walls if I didn't get something sweet in my mouth, but I can honestly say that I have no sugar cravings now. I do treat myself with something sweet during my bonus meal, but it doesn't give me the same high that it used to. I seem to have a different attitude towards food. It doesn't thrill me anymore. I think it is a healthier attitude.
One big bonus from this eating program is that it also lowers cholestrol levels. I lowered my cholesterol by 54 points the first two months on it. It is also very good for diabetics because of the low amounts of insulin that is released.
Notice also that there are several books by the Hellers, but the one which I feel is the most comprehensive is the Carbohydrate Addicts Lifespan Program.
I would recommend the Carbohydrate Addicts program to anyone who is a sugar addict and who has tried other diet programs with no success. It worked for us.
