| msmightymouse's Full Review: NutriSystem Weight Loss Program |
I've only been on NutriSystem for 10 days, but I've already lost 5 lbs. Portion control and the glycemic index are strengths of this program. The high protein content leaves me less hungry for longer than other diets I've tried. The taste of the food is on par with other "diet foods"--I find myself using lots of hot sauce on the lunches and dinners, whereas most of the breakfasts are tasty. The cereal portions are very small--but the pancake's are just right--makes about 2 or 3 cakes, which with sugar free syrup do fill me up. If you add plenty of your own spices and flavoring, you can make this work pretty well.
For me, I did poorly on Weight Watchers because of how much I hate to cook--and how hard it is to find prepared food that met the point values without going over. With NutriSystem, it works for me because there is just no counting--you know what you have for the day.
For my first order, I got the "customer favorites" package, which has all preselected varieties of foods based on what past members tend to order. The benefit of this is the large variety and getting to taste all sorts of different things. However, the flip side is that you may end up with items you don't like. Nutrisystem does offer that you can exchange your unopened packages for other items, but I really am too busy to run to the post office and ship the items off--and you first need to call Nutrisystem for a code number. I have created my custom order for the 2nd shipment, which was easy to do on the website. I have chosen my foods based on the items I liked--and eliminated all that I disliked.
You will need to purchase a few things on your own: fruits, veggies and dairy products--the women's diet emphasizes a higher calcium intake than the men's diet, hence the dairy stuff. I got fat free milk, ricotta, cottage cheese and mozzarella.
Also, folks should be aware that there are discounts available to new members if they 1) get a referral from an existing member. You may feel free to write to me for a referral discount-- please send to ninaismighty@gmail.com and always use the subject line: "NutriSystem Referral Request" so that I don't accidentally think it's spam. My reply will come from Nutrisystem with an invite to use the referral.
--and you can get a further discount for 2) ordering with the automated shipping for the next month. The cool thing is, you can cancel or delay your automatic shipment. The discount for using automated shipment is significant at just over 31$.
There are also discounts available once you're a member, which you can get by reading the "Daily Dose Newsletter" which can be found in the members section of the website. Once you get 50 clicks there (one click per day), you get an additional discount.
Some of the other reviews mention that it's hard to reach a counselor, but I can't speak to that because I've not needed one. I've found all the info I need in the literature that came with my first package and on the website. I do have to call to get two items replaced because the packaging was damaged, so I may add more later about customer service.
So far, I'm very happy to be at 10 days on this system and already 5 lbs lighter. Here's to the next 25 melting just as easily!
As for other components of Nutrisystem, the website offers a really good support section. Also, you can schedule an online appointment with a counselor to help you answer questions specifically about your diet.
The site has a daily newsletter called "the daily dose" which gives practical ideas for how to deal with every-day issues like going out to dinner, going to parties, being tempted to cheat on your diet, etc. They address attitude issues and suggest exercise. Also, printed materials come with your first shipment that focus on creating a positive thought pattern about eating and also give you ideas for exercises.
March 2006: just a quick update--still on the n/s program, and have lost 12.5 pounds total so far. Some other foods I've tried that I've liked: pot roast, nacho soy crisps, fudge graham bar, and the aisan noodles for lunch. I really haven't exercised, so all the weight loss is from my diet.
