I bought this model to replace a rotary razor that had died. I haven't found the closeness of the shave to be that much of an improvement, since I used to clean the heads on the rotary somewhat often. However, the self-cleaning feature is very nice, since I don't have to take that time any more.

The replacement cartridges can be somewhat expensive, but they are unnecessary. When it is empty, just rinse out the cartridge, flushing the whiskers down the sink. Then refill with a bottle of the cheapest electric shave lotion. You will find that the ingredients are the same -- alcohol and perfume.

Pros: A close shave and automatic cleaning
Cons: Not easy to travel with cleaning solution

I have been shaving for over 25 years and had always used a stick razor. I spent over 21 years in the military and sergeants don't put up with sloppy shaves. I had tried several electric shavers but found none that could cut it so to speak. None until last Christmas when I got this shaver. I was simply amazed at the closeness of the shave and the automatic cleaning is excellent.

Pros: Nice close to the skin cut. Self-cleaning has me spoiled!
Cons: It could use a wall mount option.

I've used electric shavers for several year. I had a Braun as my first shaver, but I replaced it with a Norelco when it's battery died. The Norelco was the "lift-and-cut" rotory type. I like to skip shaving on the weekends, and after 3 years, the Norelco wouldn't die so I just stoped using the Norelco Rip-n-cut and decided it was time to try Braun again.

I've been using this shaver for 6 months now. I've only needed to change the cleanign fluid twice. I'm not sure if I really "need" the display yet, but I suppose that I'll appreciate it when it reminds me with the part number when it comes time to replcing the cutting heads or foil.

Pros: Convenient, self-cleaning
Cons: Does not shave quite as close as a blade

Blade vs Electric? No two people will agree. Blade arguably shaves closer, but this Braun 8585 shaves virtually as close as a blade if you take your time. I love the convenience of being able to retrieve it from its base - already fully charged and automatically cleaned. When I travel, the battery will last long enough for 4-5 shaves.
