Pros: Ultra-compact, 7 megapixels, fast, stylish, user friendly, 2.5" LCD screen, and Optical Image Stabilization
Cons: Expensive, auto exposure only, red-eye, and very noisy ISO 1600 images
Way back in the dark ages, when photography was all about silver based film and chemical processing, camera choices were much simpler. Photographers who wanted an ultra-compact camera bought a Riga Minox or a Rollei 35S or they joined the CIA. The ...
Pros: Size, DIG!C III processor, daylight picture quality, battery life, simplicity, stitching assist Cons: Night time / indoors performance (noise & focus time), no advanced controls, limited DOF
With the current popularity of SLR cameras, why even bother to consider a point-n-shoot camera like the ultra compact Powershot SD800 IS? Well, I have not used a point-n-shoot camera (on a regular basis) for years and always considered my SLR ...
Pros: Image stabilization that works well, face recognition, battery life, size Cons: Price, red-eye, noise at high ISO
I have used Panasonic FX07 and FX50 and was wandering if paying significantly more for the Canon SD800 IS is justified. You can buy comparable Panasonic cameras for $80-100 cheaper. Heck, the FX50 even has a larger screen! I have always liked Canon ...
Pros: 3.8x optical zoom, wide-angle lens, 4GB movie file size, ISO1600, image stabilization, build Cons: lacks manual control, still short battery life, redeye issues, competition at price point
Decisions... decisions... I am unsure whether to keep my SD700 IS and return the SD800 or keep the SD800 and sell the SD700. Playing with the SD800 for a week hasn't made the choice much clearer either. The SD800 has some obvious improvements over ...
Pros: Wide 3.8x zoom, image stabilization, build quality, improved movie mode Cons: Auto modes reset some settings, no MPEG movie support, playback-only luminance histogram
My daughter, now a toddler, has managed to accelerate the decline and eventual demise of my beloved Sony DSC-W1. Ironic, as that camera was purchased specifically to take pictures of her as a baby. Well, its a good excuse to do some electronics ...
There are plenty of technical reviews of this model and people that obviously know alot about cameras are happy to share their views. For my plain and simple 2 cents worth, keep reading. Firstly, it is small and light enough to keep in a ...
Pros: Great photos, tons of features, small, long battery life, image stabilizer, wide angle lens! Cons: Poor build quality, no battery charge indicator, no focal length manual adjust
I'm no photography expert by any means, but after having been through a number of digital cameras in my day, and having taken hundreds of photos with this particular camera, I can say that the Canon SD800 7 megapixel Digital Elph is the best camera I ...
Pros: Beautiful camera design, 28mm equivalent lens, quick and easy camera to use. Cons: Expensive, battery door appears fragile, barrel distortion at wide angle, expensive
The first thing you have to do when getting a compact point and shoot camera is relax, take a deep breath and realize that you are not shooting with a digital SLR camera. I actually packed this camera up to send it back because I wasn't happy with image ...
Pros: Fast, 28mm wide angle, consistently very good picture quality, feature laden. Cons: Some soft corners at 28mm and PF, as most P&S cams will have.

I bought this camera as a replacement for the sd700. I wanted a camera that would perform as well as the sd700 but with a 28mm wide angle lens which i have been waiting for ...
Pros: Small shutter lag, wide angle lens, good quality stills and decent video Cons: Price, no case or strap with the camera
I was debating between this and the SD630. The reasons I went with this are: 1. Shutter lag - this seems to be a bit faster than the 630 and with kids, makes all the difference. 2. Viewfinder - while this is not something I intend to use much, it ...
Pros: small and concealable.
Nice that it shoots poor quality video too. Cons: might be too small...
No grip on shutter side.
Optical viewfinder all but useless
OK, I'll admit to being a niche shooter.. I bought this camera to take pictures while driving. Yes from behind the wheel of a car..or out the side window while it's in motion. (basically grab shots). I pride myself on having great wheel alignment ...
Pros: good pictures Cons: dead battery after 2 days of sitting
I bought the SD800 IS about 3 weeks ago and after taking a few sample pictures, I put the camera away for about 2 days. When I went to use it again, it wouldn't turn on at all, so I figured I accidentally left it turned or something and the battery ...
Pros: sharp, great detail and color, fantastic wide-angle capacity, good battery life, wellbuilt Cons: optical zoom is weak -- grainy on long zooms. not great for action shots.
The Canon Powershot SD800IS is well-constructed and light and an impressive feat of engineering. In general, the camera delivers great detail, color and accuracy. It's a hard worker -- it took daily abuse on my last 4-wk trip without a hitch. This ...
Pros: Please see the above description for details. Cons: Please see the above description for details.
I upgraded my digital camera from a 3 megapixels to this 7.1 megapixels camera to get better pictures of my baby. I am not a camera wiz, but I have been disappointed with my purchase. I wish I would have completed more research before making my purchase. ...
Pros: Compact, takes great pictures, easy to use Cons: USB door hinge is flimsy
I had an awful camera before this one so it is like comparing apples to oranges. This camera takes GREAT pictures, the shutter speed is decent so I can actually catch my 2 year old smiling before she runs off. It is SO small I can take it in my diaper ...
Pros: Ultra thin design Cons: Horrible night picture and not a user friendly manual
I got this camera because of the 7 megapixels and I liked the ultra thin, compact stylish look. I had read reviews that it was very user friendly and that the picture quality was great. When I got this camera I was very disappointed! The picture quality ...
Pros: 7 MegaPix+,superfast shutter, image stablization Cons: No red eye and a little pricey
We had a Sony that was three years old. Shutter speed was so slow that we could not get a decent picture of our two year old. She's fast and we wanted a camera that could keep up with her. I wanted fast, w/o using burst mode. This is perfect because it's ...
Pros: Easy to use. Good pictures. Cons: Expensive. Poor red-eye feature.
My wife and I bought this camera for the IS feature. Not really sure if it's worth it or not though. I like the fact that the camera is relatively easy to use. Yes there's a learning curve, but if you read the directions from cover to cover, you'll ...
Pros: compact for pant pocket; good indoor no flash pictures; stylish; clear 2.5" display; Cons: expensive; display screen scratch (probably from keys in my pocket)
I've just switched to digital from film, so I want to give you my thoughts on why I switched i) to digital and ii) to Canon SD800 IS. I need a point and shoot camera with some zoom capability that can fit in my pant pocket. I already had these ...
Pros: Fast, good battery life, good controls, great point and shoot! Cons: No AC or car power supply, you must buy a memory card.
Tiny, sleek, well laid out, sits well in your hand, controls are intuitive and obvious. I had a Kodak Easyshare DX7590 which is a good camera but frequently had focusing problems and slow focus. I wanted a camera that gave me flexibility, control, as ...
Pros: Good set of functions, stylish, compact and easy to use menu Cons: not too great capturing movement
Excellent Compact - Loads of featuresI bought this product as my friend has always sworn by Canon cameras. I paid a little extra than I planned but definitely made the right decision with the Canon Ixus IS.It comes with an excellent ...
Pros: lightweight, small and slim design, userfiendly for the amateur and great pictures. Cons: camera is slippery - easy to drop could use some rubber grip edges.
I purchased this camera in mid 2007 and have found it to be a very friendly camera to use.
The pictures are clear and the camera is pretty much dummy-proof. Though I don't think it's meant for professionals, it suits the casual photographer just fine.
It's slim design is good for fitting into a small purse when going out at night, or even your back pocket - if you were in a jam.
The camera came with a 1 Gig memory card and a bag to carry the camera in.
The camera hooked right into my computer with the USB Port.
I love this camera thus far! by runzwsizorz ,Apr 18 '07
Pros: I love the large display and sleek look. Cons: There are some features I don't really need or understand yet.
Well, I have had my camera for 2 months and I can't find anything I do not love about it. I have yet to learn all of it's functions, being that there is so much you can do with this camera, but I am in no hurry. It has everything, image stabilizing, red eye reduction, up to 15 X zoom features, continuous shooting, post card mode, movie shooting, panoramic Images, 11 color changing options, sound memo attachments, and more that I haven't gotten to learn about yet. It is pretty easy to learn how to use and is sure is compact for all the things it can do. I haven,t come across a person yet who didn't drool over the camera and wish they had gotten the same one. Some have even sold the one they had on e-bay to get this one instead. Check it out!!
Pros: Great image stabilization, simple controls, stylish looks and fast response Cons: Lack great improvement
The SD800IS is not a great improvement from the SD700IS. The only difference is that canon adds a higher resolution sensor and a wider lens. I could not find a great difference from the previous model. The picture quality was almost the same and the image stabilization was the same. Canon maintains their good-looking design and durability but limit their improvements. However the SD800IS is still a great point and shoot camera with simple controls for newbies.
Pros: Size, low light performance, flexibility, wide zoom range, easy point-and-shoot operation Cons: Almost no warning on low battery
I wanted a compact camera with good optics, good zoom capability, wide angle capability and a good reputation for reliability, but still affordable. I bought my camera through ebay and am really happy with it. It can be as simple as point and shoot or as complex as controlling zoom, scene-dependent color enhancement or precise focus and exposure control. All this in a little package that you can fit in your pocket. One feature that I wasn't expecting, that I really like, is the slide show with TV output. My mother, who is losing her vision, can still enjoy the pictures I take when I plug the video cable into her TV. I'm also really impressed with the low light performance of the camera. That's part of what makes this little silver package a lot of fun to use.
Pros: Excellent pictures. Cons: just a little shutter lag.
We wanted to upgrade from our old Toshiba PDR-M70 (which still takes terrific pictures after 7 years) to something smaller with greater resolution. Image stabilization was a requirement and the Canon SD800-IS filled the bill. We practiced with it for several months, getting rave reviews for pictures taken at a horse-and-buggy shows. Then we took it to Europe for our 12-day vacation. The results are terrific! On the M3/Fine setting with minimal zooming and display usually off, I shot 382 pictures on the first battery. I had brought along 3 additional batteries (bought off the internet). I used a Sandisk Extreme III, 1GB for the recording medium; am very pleased with that. The 572 pictures taken used less than 1/2 of the memory card.
One thing that I learned was that for indoor pictures taken more than 12 feet away, tis best to turn off the flash. The camera compensates nicely.
Will NEVER buy another Canon again by danielro ,Nov 05 '07
Pros: compact body, wide angle Cons: famous e18error (http://www.e18error.com) that Canon REFUSES to fix even for 2 weeks old camera
We really enjoyed this camera until it stopped working during our vacation. It was a brand new camera, only 2 weeks old. We sent the camera to Canon for repairs and they REFUSED to repair the famous e18error because it's "beyond economical repairs". We took good care of this camera and it's beyond disappointment that we threw $300 down the drain.
Pros: fast shutter speed, amazing picture quality, extremely long battery life Cons: nothing as of yet
From the beginning of my time I had bought nothing less of Sony when it came to digital cameras. I decided to step outside the box and go for a new brand, and I am sure glad I did! This is by far the best digital camera i've ever had. I have had this camera for over a year now, my friends have every other type of camera and I have yet to find one that I prefer over it. Definitely a good buy.
Not if kids are your subject by honestgoodguy ,Nov 15 '07
Pros: Zoom while taking video.
Custom number of shot in timer mode. Cons: No sports mode. No high shutter speed setting. Blurry pictures.
Great camera for taking pictures all arround except for when you are trying to catch kids in action.
You don't have a "sports" option. A option where the default shutter speed is set to higher speed would be great addition to this camera.
The IS (Image stablization) is os not use with you kids are moving arround.
Apart from that it is a great camera.
Not much red eye.
Very easy for new users to cover the flash causign pictures to have red eye.
User can't set it to high shutter speed. Pictures come out blurry when you try to take kids moving arround. Even slight / slow movements make the pictures unclear.
A95 and many other canons have the sports / high shutter mode. They work great. For the price that you are paying you should get the option.
It might seem like I am blowing the issue our to proportion, but I am talking from experience. I have had older canons that had the option and took better pictures.
What is even worst is that epinion has a 15 word limit on the cons.
Owned for 1 year and still in love by ashton_haley ,Jul 14 '08
Pros: Wide lens, look and feel, video Cons: none
I absolutely love this camera. I bought it for my birthday last year and I've used it non-stop ever since. The 1600 ISO is a little noisy, yes, but all in all the quality of low light photos is great. I also love the look and feel of the camera, not too small, not too big. It takes great video and the wider lens really helps to capture better images. I did a ton of research when I bought this camera and I really feel like it has everything you need. A++
Pros: Takes long video clips, excellent still shots, has a timer that takes pics well. Cons: Cant take pictures in dark, even with a flash. everything blurrs. Blurrs if you zoom
I liked the camera when I first bought it, but I STILL havent figured out how to zoom in and have pictures still be clear. They always turn out blurry. And if you take pictures in the dark, even with the flash, the pictures turn out blurry. Its great for stills in good lighting, but if someone moves, it blurrs, and the zoom will make the picture go blurry.
Great Shots, Quick & affordable by zerocrash ,Dec 01 '07
Pros: Battery life, wide angle, photo options, video options, quick turn on, great picture quality. Cons: Face detect works from time to time, need obvious face otherwise its a no show.
I took my time to use the camera after I bought it before I would write a review on it, so here it is. The camera is small enough that you can carry it in your pocket or purse, very light, and boots up very fast when you turn it on. This helps when you want to take a quick shot of something. The color combination feature is very cool, you can isolate a color that you want to show in your screen and that is the only color that will come up in your pictures the rest will be black and white, see no photoshop required. The movies are seamless with a nice zoom in feature, but only if you started the movie when you were zoomed out. The video quality and frame options are very handy to manage your memory storage or video quality. The battery has a very long life, typicaly lasting me for 3-5 days on a vacation trip and weeks with irreqular use.
