Pros: Fast, ultra compact, user friendly, very good image quality, tough stainless steel body
Cons: Mediocre battery life, weak flash, red-eye problems, chromatic aberration, and noisy ISO 400 images
Canon has dominated the ultra compact digicam market since the first Digital Elphs hit camera store shelves and the new Canon Powershot SD400 demonstrates why that trend isn't likely to change anytime soon. The SD400 provides users with 5-megapixel ...
Pros: Cool looks, sturdy, compact, fast operation, excellent picture quality, large bright LCD Cons: No manual control, flash leaves shadow in corner upclose in macro mode, no battery status

Pros: Tiny size, crisp quality photos, fast shooting, EASY to use, tough and durable, super-cool looking Cons: Port covers feel flimsy (although they haven't broken), movie sound is low quality.
Can you expect to see the tiny little hairs on a tomato plant stem when you spend less than $300 on a camera? YES! Can you get a perfect image of 22 football players scrambling across a field in poor lighting conditions? YES! Can you do ...
Pros: Very small, excellent movie mode, easy to navigate, nice photos, good size LCD Cons: weak flash, red eye problems (as with most ultra-compact), portrait scene mode is poor
After comparing all the top ultra-compact digital cameras in the 5MP range, I decided on the PowerShot SD400 Digital Elph and have not been disappointed. I love this camera! About the closest camera by comparison was a Sony 5MP. One of the determining ...
Pros: So easy to use from taking photos to loading them to my computer! Cons: The battery-life is not the greatest and the red-eye reduction doesn’t work very well
Let me start by saying, I am not a photographer. I am an average user and as far as electronics go I am the same level enough knowledge to get me into trouble sometimes! The Canon Powershot SD400 Digital ELPH (5.0 mega pixels) has changed my ...
Pros: Excellent features, photo quality, speed, construction, size, movie mode Cons: Photos sometimes come out soft or with blown highlights. Some noise present, low light/ISO performance
I recently purchased a Canon Powershot SD400 Digital Elph. I have only had the camera for a few weeks and thus have not taken a large number of pictures. This review is based on my experience thus far with the camera, and hopefully will respond well to ...
Pros: Excellent start up time. Cons: Camera shake, Flash is noticiable. No battery meter. Terrible TV Video display.
I always wanted to own one of the Canon Digital Elph's, so I purchased the SD400 to replace my Sony P5. My Sony had consistently taken great pictures and even had a email copy mode to store a second low resolution picture for web posting or email. I ...
Pros: 5.0 megapixels, 640x480 movies limited only by memory card Cons: No small enough for wallet.
The SD400 is a 5.0 megapixel compact camera from Canon. Differences between SD400 and SD300 The SD400 has more megapixels and it has a different processing chip, which allows high resolution movies 640x480 as compared to 320x240. The SD300 has a ...
Pros: Size, speed, cable to hook to TV and watch slide shows Cons: Expensive replacement batteries, NG except daytime pictures (like all other pocket cameras)
This is my 3rd digital camera, my Nikon flash died after about 100,000 shots and it was replaced with a Cannon A75, while on a recent business trip to the south, someone must have read Epinions about how good of a camera that was so they stole it right ...
Pros: Durable, good looks, easy to use. Cons: Weak flash, low battery life, poor video quality.
Sick of buying expensive electronics that break down easily, this camera was bought with the promise of lasting a lifetime. It has lasted 4 years and still is a reliable camera. Sleek looking, durable, and with a simple display, I would recommend ...
Pros: Small size, big pictures!
Lots of tweaks and options Cons: Mediocre battery life
I'm not a professional photographer. I don't know all the technical sounding terms that photographers use. I do, however, like to have a good camera. I invested in a high quality SLR 35mm camera years ago, but didn't make the switch over to digital until ...
Pros: great size, good quality Cons: poor battery indicator
I have a larger digital SLR camera, so I was looking for a smaller digital camera to take with me when I don’t want to have the hassle of lugging a big camera around. Then I found the Canon Powershot SD400. It was one of the smaller cameras around when ...
Pros: Small size, excellent picture/video quality, inexpensive, easy to use at any skill level. Cons: None
The Canon PowerShot SD400 is PERFECT for your primary-use digital camera. The size is about that of a deck of standard playing-cards, which is important, because what good is a digital camera if it's so bulky or so expensive that you always leave it at ...
Pros: Tiny! Long battery life Cons: Has trouble capturing pictures of targets in motion
The Canon Digital ELPH SD400 is simply one of the best tiny cameras available. My family and I have been buying ELPH's from Canon since they were still offered in APS film versions. The key selling point about this camera is it's size and Canon keeps ...
Pros: Easy to use, great outdoor pics, lots of options, good auto-focus Cons: LCD screen lags at times, must press too firmly to take a picture
This is a great camera. I've had an Olympus c-3040 zoom for a long time, and while it takes great outdoor pics, I've been waiting for a good small camera to carry around all the time. Checklist of what I wanted: 3x optical zoom , 5MP , CCD, something ...
Pros: Size. Price vs. performance is EXCELLENT, compared to SD300, SD450, SD500, and SD550. Cons: Almost every Powershot model has different controls on the back - CONSTANT RELEARNING :(
This camera is the 5th that I have owned in the PowerShot series. This model is small, slender, and chic, without giving up any performance. The SD400 is much improved over the 'S' series (ie. S410) in that it does not take NEARLY as long ...
Pros: Small (could be smaller now though!), rugged, good movie mode, ease of use Cons: picture quality isn't as nice as I'd like (specifically indoors), some challenges in macro mode
I studied camera reviews for months before deciding what to buy (came down to the DSC-P200 & SD400...thought a couple other manufacturers were coming out with smaller/possibly better photograph quality models about the time I decided). In the end, I ...
Pros: Fast, small, good battery life Cons: Possibly delicate LCD, no stabilizer
This is my 3rd Canon Digital Elph. I love the quality feel, the small size and the great battery life, and the fact that I can tweak the picture settings a lot. The fast power up time and cycle time between shots is nice too.
The 640x480 30fps movie mode (almost DVD quality) is great (though the lack of image stabilizing makes things sometimes unavoidably wiggly looking).
My only real complaint is that with "auto" mode, outdoor shots of people sometimes have skin tone that's too blue, as if the camera guessed the wrong white balance. This happened with my older Canons too. It's easy enough to get around this by using manual mode though.
Other reviewers mentioned that the LCD was fragile, so the first thing I did was order a thick plastic protector from www.daproducts.com. It's not beautiful but it sure looks like it'll help with avoiding accidental damage (note: this is NOT the thin peel on/off protector that you can find advertised elsewhere, it is a solid thick piece of plastic).
Pros: high quality photos with realistic colors, small size, lightweight, good controls Cons: flimsy battery cover, flash a little too bright sometimes
I purchased this camera to replace my 2MP Canon Powershot S10. I have had that camera for years and have been very satisfied with it, except I wanted to upgrade. I looked at many other manufacturer's cameras but chose to stay with Canon because of the quality. My new camera takes beautiful pictures that have realistic colors. I am surprised at how well indoor pictures look. The only negative I have seen is that the flash is sometimes a little too good when shooting up close. Other than that, this small, pocketable camera is a winner.
My favorite thing in the world by carolyn0219 ,Sep 02 '06
Pros: Compact, convenient, easy, crystal clear, impressive, full of features, bargain, addictive, big screen, perfect. Cons: If you leave it at home, you will miss it. :(
I love this camera. There is not one thing that I would change. I literally carry it everywhere I go, in a little samsonite cell phone case I bought at Target for $4. I always have it at parties and gatherings, which we otherwise would have no pictures of. Also, it is nearly impossible to take a blurry or otherwise "off" picture.
I do recommend buying an extra battery, so that you never have to worry about running out of power when using the camera excessively, like on a road trip. I also keep extra memory cards just for organizational purposes, but that's not necessary.
This camera is small, impressive looking, and has everything you could need. The pictures amaze me still, and I've had this camera for about 18 months. It is easy to use, and I recommend reading the instructions on the various features so that you use them to their fullest potential. The digital macro (I use for nature close-ups) and color accent features are particularly impressive.
No, I don't work for Canon, nor was I camera-crazy before this purchase.
Pros: Quality, Size, Durability, Price, Ease of Use Cons: Haven't found any yet!
I love my camera! It has very easy to use settings. From close up digital macro to far away all of the picture are of wonderful quality. I received this as a present 4 years ago. Its so small, I carry it in my purse at all times. Its so light weight, durable, and easy to use, my five year old uses it. It takes pictures and videos. To sum it up I would definitely recommend this camera to anybody and everybody.
Excellent camera. Very HAPPY. by arqmasiu ,Oct 08 '05
Pros: Excellent battery life and fast shutter fire. Cons: Small screen.
I buy a digital camera every year. I had strayed away from canon because it use to take a good second or two before the pictures snapped. Now with the SD400 the shutter fires immediately after you press the button. Also great battery life.
Large camera in a small body by chevychase43 ,Dec 10 '05
Pros: 2" LCD, metal construction, ease of use, quality Cons: need to buy additional memory, comes with 16MB.
The Canon SD400 is an awesome camera. Metal construction large 2" LCD and 5 megapixels. It takes very clear pictures, is very easy to use. It has limited manual controls which I prefer and you can start taking pictures without even reading manual.
I have been unhappy with it since I took it out of the box. My main complaint is, you must use the flash at all times in order to get decent color and focus. Even in full daylight. Indoor shots are very grainy and blurry. It doesn't have an action setting, so trying to take a picture of anything moving faster than a snail, and it will be blurry. Outdoor shots are OK (as long as your subject isn't moving), but nothing like my previous camera, that I thought I was upgrading from.
I wish someone had posted this before by ewheatley ,Aug 30 '05
Pros: It's very chic, is rumored to take good pictures. Cons: Quality. Apparently every S- and A-model powershot has had the E18 lens problem for years
I got all of 5 days of use out of the SD400 before the lens assembly crapped out. Do yourself a favor and search google for "Canon E18" before buying this camera. Cheapo plastic parts in the lens drive assembly mean that you might be buying an expensive (and very chic) piece of junk.
So far, Canon service has been disappointing -> "please send us the camera (at my expense) and we'll let you know in 10-14 business days if it's covered by warranty" Excuse me? You sold me a defective product and now it's MY problem to send it to you? Take a lesson from other companies, Canon -> if it's your product, you take responsibility for it.
I hope to one day experience the camera I bought, but so far I have to say that my copy (and others, do the google) are lemons. Avoid.
Awesome Camera with Tons of Features... by jcomblo ,May 11 '05
Pros: Image quality, size, solid construction. Cons: Some red-eye on pics, 12x zoom isn't outstanding.
I researched a new digital camera for months before deciding to buy the SD400. I narrowed my choices down to two 5 megapixel cams: the Canon or the Sony W5. The Sony was a bit too bulky and memory costs were too high, so I bought the Canon. The size and Canon name sold me. I've been using this camera for about two weeks now and it does everything that I want it to and more. The picture quality is outstanding in every mode, the ease of use is phenomenal, and it's compact and easy to take anywhere. I never intended on using the video feature when I bought the SD400 but it's nice to have and the videos are great quality, rivaling my Sony Mini-DV. I haven't messed around with the manual features yet but I bought a digital camera for mostly point-and-shoot situations. I don't think you can go wrong with this camera if you're looking for a 5 megapixel model.
Pros: zoom while recording video
can't be broken
very very small
quick reaction time
no blurriness Cons: It can't cook for me, or pay for my plane ticket to Alaska.
My father has worked in camera repair & testing for over 30years and this was the camera he gave to me for my birthday this year. This is after he tested it himself for several months.
I have a shaky hand, but I have not had a blurry picture yet -- which is a problem I had with Sony's.
Another amazing feature is that it can zoom while you are recording video clips -- another thing the Sony's can't do.
Plus compact.
I took this on my trip to Alaska & now have a poster-size print of a glacier on my wall, & everyone asks where I bought it.
Also very sturdy, which is great since I am such a clutz.
AND you can hook it up with the provided cables to your TV and watch the pictures as a slideshow or video. Nice.
Thanks, dad!
SD400 is A+++. Compact size, fast processing, great images! by eju ,May 17 '05
Pros: Small size, fast processor. Cons: Flimsy hinge on door covering USB port.
I was torn between the SD400, the SD500, and sticking with my existing S-400. I made the leap to the SD400 and am very happy. Compared to the S-400, the SD400 has:
-smaller body size
-faster processing when reading and writing images
-higher megapixel resolution (5.0 instead of 4.0).
Compared to the SD500, the SD400 has
-a slightly smaller body size
-lower price
-no visible resolution difference for prints smaller than 8x10".
Are there any cons? Just a few minors -- the flap covering the external USB port could be stronger, whereas it's instead hinged with rubber. In addition, the viewfinder is not a perfect match with the image shown -- although it's definitely fine for everyday use.
Inexpensive, light and better than average by bj70117 ,Jan 08 '06
Pros: Small, lightweight, quality fit and finish. Cons: Comes with very little storage media. Expect to spend another 50-100 bucks to upgrade.
This was a gift so I didn't have a say in the choice of brand. However, it is a good camera with sleek look and most importantly, very small. Since I have little fingers I do not find the controls hard to work. Monster hands beware, you might need a larger camera in the size format of an SLR. Pictures are quite good. Some over-saturation occurs but this can be compensated with most photo editing software. I am most impressed with the macro and close focus of this camera. The zoom function is average while producing good results. Very little storage capacity with the supplied SD card. I would give 4 out of 5 stars overall.
This is my first digital camera. I am really happy with the ease of using, the manual and quick guide are very easy to understand.
The Software that accompanied this camera is pretty limited.
The shutter lag time was a lot longer than I expected and takes some getting use to.
Overall, this camera is good for its size, easy to use and takes great outdoor pictures. It doesn't take very good indoor people pictures though.
The display is also really grainy and not representative of what you are seeing.
After 5 days of owning this camera, I'm ready to pass it on to one of the kids and go a step up.
Canon Very bad - stay away! by aremick ,Oct 08 '05
Pros: Nice features, easy to use. Compact flash film format - bigger than 1 gig... Cons: Bad memory error. Look on internet - many others not pleased. Do not buy!!!
Pretty good, until you get that dreaded memory error - again and again and again.
I will stay away from this brand in the future, probably go back to good old Olympus...
It's a tiny camera, honestly its like the size of the new sony ericsson phones & the photo quality is commendable. Speedy response times, but that I cannot confirm for 'every' camera cause I actually did get a very speed card to go with it which kinda adds a boost to the speed. Video recording is only limited by the size of the card & it has got a respectable frame rate. Overall its a very good camera, I would recommend this for anyone looking to buy a digital camera though NOT for a person looking for advanced settings. For the price nothing will come even close to it !
Great and small but battery problem by dookaraki ,Feb 09 '06
Pros: Extremely small and discreet. Short charge time. Durable; capable of withstanding many falls. Cons: Short battery life. finger blocks flash if not careful.
Though extremely small, this camera was extremely durable. I could easily stick it in my pocket and not worry about it getting damaged. The only downside was the battery life. The battery would die even if you weren't using the camera. It was almost as if the energy wasn't really "stored" but constantly being let out. Canon made up for this battery problem by making the charge time very very brief (probably just an hour). Highly recommend for trips to places where bringing an expensive camera would worry you. Many different manual settings.
