“Such beauty and such temper are the highest claims a women could possess.”

by Greatpilgrim Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 1000, Mar 19 '01
Pros: delightful, fairly easy to read, very entertaining, excellent characterization
Cons: the plot and message, while positive, can hardly be called deep
Jane Austen seems to have a fascination with marriage, love/hate relationships, absurdities, and persuasions to marry or not to marry. This is evident through her use of these themes in all of her major works – Pride and Prejudice, Sense and...

Match Making gone awry!

by teresah , Dec 15 '99
Pros: Entertaining story
Cons: Difficult language
Emma is a wonderful read about a young lady in England in the early in the 1800s. She tries her hand at match making, only to find that perhaps she has been too successful and has matched the man she loves with someone else!
The author, Jane Austen,...

Emma and her Coming of Age story

by baby.baby , May 11 '02
Pros: coming of age, relate well to characters and plot
Cons: maybe too drawn out at points, but also a positive characteristic of patience and persistence
Jane Austen's subtle style allows her to develop characters in a humorous sense. After reading so many chapters, we have an idea who will end up with who. Jane Austen knew this from the start and by developing Emma in this fashion she allows us to...

Some stories never die..

by fishifishi , Dec 23 '99
Pros: The whole story
Cons: Nothing
"Emma" by Jane Austen, written in the early 1800's, is one of my favorite novels. It tells the story of a young matchmaker who is so busy trying to set everyone else up, that she doesn't realize who her true love is. As with all of Austen's...

Emma is a Must Read

by eshenton , Dec 02 '99
Pros: A wonderful story about a young girl constantly getting herself in trouble
Cons: The language is a little hard to get used to. Read a little Shakespeare first.
Emma is a lovely story, but if you're younger than 20, I suggest you watch the movie 'Clueless' before delving into this book. Perhaps, you should watch the A&E version of this book as well.

Jane Austen, as always is a wonder with the...
