by Bryan_Carey Bryan_Carey is a Top Reviewer on Epinions in Restaurants & Gourmet, Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 10, Jul 05 '06
Pros: Nice complex flavors
Cons: High price; Tendency to spoil
England is known for making some fine beer and I enjoy quaffing an occasional English pint every now and then when the opportunity presents itself. One beer that I often find in taverns and in specialty stores is Hobgoblin, a product of ...

What's the Matter Lager Boy?

by tange , Sep 15 '04
Pros: A tasty, strong beer.
Cons: A bit too common where I am.
Recentlt I have been retracing old steps and reviewing some classic beers. This one is a strong beer that is well worthy of a review. In fact, I’m not sure why I haven’t written about it already! Today I am sampling Hobgoblin and, although I ...

Review of Hobgoblin

by andaryl Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 500, Nov 22 '00
Pros: Good flavour, a little different
Cons: Needs better distribution
This is a beer that I had never heard about until my mother picked one up at Trader Joe's for me.Brewed by Wychwood Brewery in Oxfordshire, England, Hobgoblin is an import and not one of those brewed under licence beers. The beer is classed as a ...

Hand me another Gobullygook

by LaFeet Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 500, Jan 27 '05
Pros: Fab taste, available in armpit Oklahoma
Cons: Clear glass can lead to spoilage, college town nearby thinks it is trendy
That’s what my wife calls Hobgoblin English Ale. And somehow it seems fitting. I have had several Wychwood Brewery creations, but Hobgoblin ale is my favorite by far. As with Newcastle, Hobgoblin is ...

Vicious blighter and that's only the label

by AlanCrax , Nov 04 '03
Pros: A good example of an English premium ale
Cons: Bitterness a little overdone for my taste
The crumbs of the anchovy egg sandwiches have been swept away; the plates have been wiped clean of the remnants of the jelly and custard, the faint incandescence of the celebration light bulb has now gone out. My birthday festivities have been consigned t ...

by caithnessfan Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 1000, May 30 '06
Pros: Great summer cooler, or with a spicy dish, great complexity and flavour
Cons: Clear glass bottle, price, hard to find regularly
I experienced Hobgoblin Traditional English Ale several years ago while stationed in the UK but this is the first time that I have had it since my return to the USA. Background notes I'll start off with a quote from the bottle.. "Full bodied ...

A dark brew, interesting and complex

by 4-1-1 Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 50, Nov 06 '00
Pros: good tasting, stout, well made brew, different
Cons: a little too sweet; hard to find, need to go to specialty shop
This English ale is 5.5% alcohol and is brewed using a combination of strongly-roasted pale malt with a touch of chocolate malt. It is brown/ruby-red in color, with a light head and a sweet malty nose. The finish is complex: a mix of malt, chocolate...

A Hobgoblin Reaches Our Shores: Send More!

by MiDoyle Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 1000, Dec 21 '00
Pros: A very good brew for lovers of malt and character; highly drinkable and satisfying
Cons: An expensive luxury
Hobgoblins and Brewers…Oh My!
The Wychwood Brewery in Witney, Oxfordshire, England started in 1983 as a one-person operation. It is now a proper brewery, small in size, but increasing in stature among beer lovers. The small brewery now...

Devilishly good

by latakiahaze , Mar 07 '01
Pros: Big complex beer, widely available in the UK
Cons: Not for the faint hearted
Wychwood are one of the success stories of the smaller British brewers, benefiting from some of the larger supermarkets decisions to take quality bottled beer seriously. Both Hobgoblin and Fiddler's Elbow are widely available across the UK in bottles and...

Yessss, my little Nasssty...

by galtwish , Jun 19 '00
Pros: Unique in my experience, absolutely delicious
Cons: Difficult to find, spendy
Hobgoblin Traditional English ale is a happy beer made with expertise and a devilish sense of fun. This warm tasting ale is best enjoyed at traditional ale temperatures (50-60F for the colonists among us), where the full bouquet and taste can be...

Been there, drank that, bought the T-Shirt

by booknet , Apr 08 '01
Pros: A nice, dark beer, sweet, pleasant aftertaste.
Cons: Hard to find, not something you'd want to drink all the time.
Hobgoblin is a nice, dark beer. Indeed, most of the drinks brewed by Wychwood are nice, and they make a wide selection of beers (including an organic one, so they cater for all beer drinkers!).

It's dark and sweet - very rich, almost caramely...

Beer brewed by Goblins

by Thrud , Nov 24 '00
Pros: Good beer in a good bottle.
Cons: As far as I know, unavailable on tap.
Any beer which bears the Wychwood mark will be good, but this really is the pick of the bunch.

When poured, it's one of the most pleasing beers I've seen - a deep ruby red colour which makes the mouth water.

Taste wise it doesn't...
