Pros: The story is very imaginative, detailed, and exciting. Cons: None!
I was not a happy child. I hated being a child and I hated my childhood. I was picked on in school. There were a lot of reasons the other kids didn’t like me. I was heavy. I was white in an inner-city school and you know it was my fault that...
Pros: A wonderful mix of prose, dialect, verse , and song Cons: Dahl can't write any more
Don’t let the title fool you, the book about which I am beginning to gush is a wonderful read for kids and adults of nearly any age over 5 (and some even before that).
Year after year, Thanksgiving after Thanksgiving, I sat, along with my...
Pros: Dahl's invented words and over-the-top villains Cons: not as good as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
This was Roald Dahl's first children's book. He'd written books for adults before this, and would write others later, including one title that I'm unable to mention here, due to the censorship restrictions (but it starts with "Switch"). Since this...
Pros: Imaginative plot and engaging characters. Cons: None.
James and the Giant Peach is the first book that I'd gotten excited about as a kid. I'd read other books before this one, but they did not leave the impression on me that James did.
Pros: Wonderful Characters and Plot Line Cons: A Small Portion of the Dialogue May Offend Certain People
James and the Giant Peach (Roald Dahl - 1961) is the charming tale of a boy and the rather peculiar friendships that he forges with a group of insects who have become almost his size. This book has been a classic pretty much since the day of it’s...
Pros: All-around fun, enjoyable read, great story Cons: More detail is needed
Introduction Let it be known that I've read this book on several occasions throughout my life, including childhood. James and the Giant Peach was one of my favorite books at an earlier age, and upon finishing it once more only a few days ...
Pros: Fast-paced, fun, unusual Cons: A bit gruesome
Roald Dahl is accepted as an author of twisted and strange children's tales where the child always wins and adults, very often, meet rather nasty ends. James and the Giant Peach is no exception to that pattern.
James is a little poor boy whose mummy and daddy died when James was a little boy. James had to leave his lovely old house and his kind friends and move in with his two nasty, abusing aunts. James' aunts are called Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker, and since...
James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl by shelia50 ,Jul 16 '05
Pros: This book is about friends working together and succeeding for a common cause. Cons: The book seems to minimize the importance of James' parents dying.
My name is Shelia Coleman. I am a junior majoring in Elementary Education at West Virginia State University. As a grandmother of 4 young grandsons, I would not recommend this book for younger students. On the other hand, I think 5th and 6th grade children would enjoy it very much. The content of the book is somewhat of a morbid nature, especially when the author was telling about James' parents being eaten by a rhinocerous. All in all, the book has a storyline that will spark the imagination of its readers. Thank you, Shelia Coleman
