Minolta’s Dimage Xi A Tiny Digital Camera with a Very Large Problem

by Howard_Creech Howard_Creech is a Lead on Epinions in Electronics, Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 10, Feb 11 '03
Pros: Stylish, ultra Compact, 3X zoom, 3 Megapixels
Cons: Weak flash, poor battery life, limited feature set, design/ergonomics, fuzzy pictures
The Dimage X (introduced last year) was Minolta’s first foray into the popular micro digicam realm, a market segment that’s always been dominated by Canon’s digital elph models. Minolta’s engineers were charged with the daunting task of...

Dimage Xi...Almost perfect!

by mrhummer3 , Jan 05 '03
Pros: A great "have-it-with-you-all-the-time" camera!
Cons: White balance when using flash delivers pictures having a bluish cast.
I purchased the Dimage Xi after much research. I was looking for a small digital camera that I could have with me all the time. In addition, I also wanted a camera that had the capability of recording video clips at 30fps with audio, and the Dimage Xi...

Super compact full featured digital camera

by charlesp2001 , Jul 18 '06
Pros: Super tiny, great image quality, lots of features, good battery life
Cons: Lens position
When I first laid eyes on a Minolta Dimage Xi camera I knew I had to have one. It's super tiny and takes fantastic photos. The LCD screen may be small compared to newer digital cameras but it still offers a great image allowing you to take better ...

A Pocket Camera

by tochriste , Jan 05 '03
Pros: small and compact, nice looking, good quality photos
Cons: a little awkward due to it's size, easy to block the lens when taking pictures
This camera very easily fits in your pocket, yet it takes quality shots. The 3.2 megapixel sensor allows you to create photo quality 8X10 prints. It also has a 3x optical zoom plus 4X digital zoom, for a total of 12x zoom. That's pretty impressive for a...

Perfection Perfected

by gtwerra , May 20 '05
Pros: Much Improved over the X, Stronger Zoom, 3.2 MP, Crisp Lifelike Pictures
Cons: Still no ability to crop pictures
I've had a chance to play around with my new Dimage Xi and have found it to be much improved over the X model and it easily keeps up with cameras 3 times its size. This is my 6th digital camera (I've owned Sony, Olympus, Casio, Etc) and found the Dimage...

Great camera to always have with you!

by michaelac , Dec 18 '02
Pros: size, quick startup, 3MP
Cons: proprietary battery
The body has very rugged feel. It has a good quality design. It has a special audio recording mode that will record audio for 30 mins. The camera metering seems to be top notch.

Compared to my Olympus 2100UZ, this micro-sized camera does...

Dimage Xi - great when weight & size matter

by chrisspear , Jun 03 '04
Pros: Size, weight, picture quality, durability
Cons: Costly for resolution, new users put their thumb over lens
I bought this camera to carry with me when I bike. Size and weight were my first concerns, so I compared it to the Canon PowerShot models, recommended by a friend. There is no comparison! The Minolta is smaller, generally has better resolution, and is ...

Small camera with large abilities

by wantsummadis , Apr 24 '03
Pros: size, audio capability, ease of use, design
Cons: location of lens makes it easy to block when holding, menu is difficult to manage
I really enjoy this camera. Although it does have some drawbacks, it is much smaller than all the other ones I have seen with this grouping of options. Ability to record MPEGs, zoom, and record audio are three benefits to consider.

Due to...

Minolta Dimage Xi

by gglo , Sep 07 '03
Pros: Size, size and size!
Cons: Spendy.
This is my second digital camera. My first is a Nikon Coolpix (which is a very good camera). I bought the Minolta because of its small size, 3 megapixels, etc. I have read lukewarm reviews of the Xi, but I don't understand the criticism. This is a...

Terrific camera

by drivesmith , Mar 13 '03
Pros: small, light, good picture quality, easy to use
Cons: careful or you'll block lens with finger!
I've had the camera a few weeks; it's my first digital camera. Took it on vacation to Arizona. I found it so convenient and easy to use. Fits in your pocket without bulk or discomfort. I was surprised by the power of the flash - it lit up a good size...

Nice compact camera
by freak_lad ,Sep 26 '03
Pros: Small size, image quality, ease of use.
Cons: Slight delay from pressing button to when picture is taken. location of lens.
This is a very easy to use and very small camera. It takes great pictures and you can just point and shoot. The best thing about this camera is that it fits in your pocket which means that you can take it with you anywhere and take a picture whenever you see something funny.

As for image quality I must say that I am very impressed. If I was going to take beautiful pictures of nature etc I would probably bring my 35mm SLR camera since nothing beats real film in my opinion. But for all other applications I think that this camera will be more than enough.

I have it with a 128 Mb memory card and it has room for lots of pictures and movies. The movies are a little grainy but that is probably because the movies I have taken so far have been indoors and at night.

Great Camera
by joseph-herrera ,Apr 28 '04
Pros: Compact, Lightweight, easy to operate, FAST start up, battery life, Zoom ,very reliable
Cons: so small I dropped it too many times, Night pictures on previous models were bad.
One would think such a small camera is fragile,However after dropping this camera over 12 times (hard falls) the only damage was to the casing and the loss of several screws. I recently took a jungle trip in which other members had bulky cameras, and difficulty holding on to them without fear of damage, The Minolta DiMAGE was in my shirt pocket ready for action, The speed was incredibly fast and I could take 30 minute video with a 128 card.
I recently purchased the new DiMAGE, and it has everything the big ones have, but with much more versatility, If you are a hiker and are looking to lighten your load, or backpacker, this is the Camera.
Sincerely;
A world Traveler
Some of the specs on this site are wrong, I use my DiMAGE on Windows operating system on an HP laptop, don't even need the software. simply plug and play.

Minolta does it again! I...
by gabriel_dt3000 ,Dec 23 '02
Minolta does it again! I owned a DiMage X-and loved it-but when the new Xi arrived I had to have it. The added features of automatic email filing, better anti-reflective screen, and the convenience of automatic delete-as well as other enhancements make this camera perfect for anybody-on the go. The 3.2 Mega Pixel Resolution is a real plus The 35 second video feature is real cool too. It is easy to hold and so small I take it everywhere! I love this camera even more than the X! I recommend the optional AC Adaptor to plug in when using on computer-or for extended periods. I also use a 128MB SD Memory card and have two additional batteries. I have NEVER run out of juice or memory-even on extended trips.
