Pros: Gorgeous Images, USB Ready, 2.1 Megapixels, Inexpensive, Easy to use... Cons: None
When Olympus released the D-490 2.1 Megapixel Digital camera, they knew they had a winner on their hands. And while everyone seemed to love the camera, love the pictures it could create, and love the features it had, there were two glaring problems with...
Pros: Convenient, good quality pictures, works reliably Cons: Runs through batteries very fast, annoying delay in taking pictures
I've owned my Olympus Camedia D-510 Zoom for a little less than a year now. While I've never had any major problems with the camera, there are a few design issues that I find a bit annoying. Overall, I'm pleased with its performance, so much so that I ...
Pros: Superb resolution quality images, good price, USB, panorama, up to ISO 400 Cons: No significant cons.
Update: I've used this camera for well over 4 years now, and it still works perfectly! I've even dropped it a couple of times with no damage! With my AA NiMH rechargeable batteries, I only have to swap out the batteries every few weeks to charge ...
Pros: Great images, pocketable, fast and easy to use. Cons: No information LCD on the top, instruction manual on a CD, No rechargeable batteries/charger included.
The Olympus D-510 is a sleek, no nonsense, fine looking digital camera that replaces the popular D-490. In a new design Olympus has moved away from the rounded silver/gold trim of the 490 and given the 510 a facelift and the addition of a USB...
Pros: Good picture quality and price Cons: weak included software; not many add-ons
My wife and I received this camera as a house warming present from my parents who wanted to see the house and our young son after the move. We put some time into determining what we wanted in a camera and put our own 'wish list' together.
Pros: Small, 3X Optical/9X digital zoom, Quicktime Movie mode, USB, 2.1 Megapixel Cons: Eats up batteries.
2.1 Megapixel
This is so awesome, you wouldnt believe the resolution you can get on this camera. When I upload the pictures onto my computer and view them, they are larger than my screen itself and Im running a very high resolution on my...
Pros: Fast picturetaking, good picture quality, good feature set for price Cons: Horrible manual, mediocre software
Bottom line: The D-510 is the best lower mid-range digital camera I found.
I recently decided to upgrade from my ancient (but then top-of-the-line!) 680x420 Minolta. After "road testing" a couple cameras friends and family owned- I knew none...
Pros: Powerful camera, low cost, impressive picture results Cons: Software is weak, menu systems need to be revised, no case
I've always thought that Digital Cameras were one of the most important Killer Apps of the technological age. But it has taken until now for the technology to advance enough and produce a product that has the quality and features to truly...
Pros: Compact, point & shoot easy, 3x optical zoom lens, USB, great photos. Cons: Eats batteries like the famine is coming tomorrow, only 8mb card included, confusing menu system.
Olympus' newest top model to the extremely popular "D" series certainly shows that this company knows how to make a good thing even better. The single best and most long awaited improvement over it's older sibling, the D-490Z is the addition of a speedy...
Pros: 2.1 mega pixel, Auto flash with some extra flash features,TV out,USB,3X zoom Cons: Poor manual, Night pictures probably, Only 8 Mb memory card included
I had been hanging around for over a month on the net reading reviews about which was the best digital camera to buy. Obviously i wanted a 2.1 megapixel digital camera and price was also a constraint for me. I had been considering the Canon powershot A20...
Pros: Small, decent price, good pictures. Cons: See review
I bought this camera after doing a lot of online research and reading. I narrowed my search down to 3 cameras: Toshiba PDR-61, Canon A20, and this Olympus D-510. (Interestingly, all 3 were in one top 5 review). I dropped the Toshiba because it seemed...
Pros: Size, optical zoom, photo quality, price Cons: Standard memory is low, full documentation only on CD-ROM
I have had my D-510 for about three months now, and I could not be happier. It is easy to use and takes great pictures. At under $350, it's a great deal, too.
As with almost everything I buy, I researched digital cameras to death. I decided...
Pros: Easy to use, great lighting in dark environment, price Cons: Some blurry photos in motion and exposure is too dark when shadowed under sun
My last 35 mm point and shoot Yashica started scratching the films so I retired it. I was impressed with the digital photos I have seen, so I knew I wanted to try a digital camera. I had always liked Yashica but couldn't find a cheaper digital version of...
I recently bought the Olympus D-510 Zoom. I am repeatedly impressed with the improvements that they have made to the camera as compared to my last digital camera, the Olympus D-490 Zoom.

I purchased this camera in hopes of decreasing the amount we spend on photo developing and I think that within 2 or 3 years it will. I got this camera because the Fuji camera I had my eye on was on a 2 month...
Pros: Great pics, easy to use. Cons: Bad on/off switch, Viewer is in bad place
This was my first Digital camera so I did quite a bit of research. Unfortunately, Pic quality is not everything as I found out. The camera is really cool and takes great pics but the viewer is a bad place. By that I mean that whenever I take a picture I...
Pros: close-ups are beautiful, simply and easy to use Cons: small memory card I would recomend upgrading to a 128mb
The decision to purchase this camera is based upon its easy, simple features. There aren't too many options for you to adjust but for the techno-novice, this is a good thing. It comes with a good selection of software, rechargable batteries (a must on a...
Pros: Moderately priced, easy to use, portable format, great pictures Cons: Missing functions, cheapish appearance, severe quality problems
The D-510 is called C-200 in Europe, and was my introduction into digital photography for some time ago. It is a very small and handy little camera in silver colored resin plastic with a 3 x optical zoom. The camera is surprisingly light but a bit...
Pros: Rated highly by many reviewers Cons: Quality Problems
I have spent extensive time in the past few months researching digital cameras, and when I saw the Olympus 510Z available for $299 on clearance, I knew it was the camera for me. If you want to hear my experience with the 510, skip to the end. If you...
Pros: Point and shoot, battery life, decently sized viewing screen Cons: No digital info readout, some features buried in the menu
I was looking into buying a digital camera for home and vacation use. I read a multitude of reviews on this site and many others and one camera I kept finding good reviews about was the Olympus D-150. My wife and I decided to run to a couple of stores...
Pros: Good image quality, easy to use, good optics (lens). Cons: Stupid clamshell-door design turns camera off at merest touch. Little configure-ability, slow startup, shutter lag.
I would agree with most of the reviews for this camera, the good things that have been said. I have only a few things to add. I bought this camera in October/November 2001 (yeah, I know, the review is a little late ;-) ). After having used this camera ...
Pros: Great Pictures. Easy to use. Great battery life with NiMH. Cons: Shutter cover/flash cumbersome.
I loved my Canon Rebel 2000 SLR camera, but was taking so many pictures, the cost of developing pictures was great. I decided to make the change to digital. I had a budget of $300.00 to $375.00 for a camera, so most of the better 3 Mpixel cameras were...
Pros: Easy to use, very clear pictures, and lots of features Cons: The icons on the camera are hard to read.
This is my first digital camera purchase and I am extremely pleased with the 510Z. Construction quality is great and has a very solid feel. I have read other reviews who suggest the sliding lens cover may damage the lens, but when you actually see how it...
Pros: Very nice Pictures Cons: None that I can see.
I looked at many Digital cameras and was always drawn to the Olympus 510 Zoom. I really couldn't bring myself to by it as it was $399. So I looked at other models around the $200 range. I found a RCA digital that I bought and it lasted about a week...
Pros: Easy to use. Great quality pictures. Lots of features. Cons: Bulky and awkward. Heavy.
The camera takes really great pics. I looked at other cameras from fuji and canon but this one was the best. I've had it for a couple of years now and I always get compliments on the pictures. The panoramic feature is really good and easy to use. ...
Pros: Compact, nice zoom, sliding cover, and picture quality. Cons: No manual focus, terrible documentation, on camera menus not user-friendly
I've had my D-510 for about 10 days. The basics are easy enough but using features beyond the basics is not easy. There are three hard copy things that could be called manuals plus a different PDF manual (the best one), plus online help with the imaging...
Pros: Ease of use, ability to download to your computer, price, battery life Cons: Doesn't include an AC adapter, instruction booklet was unclear regarding downloading.
My wife was about 8 months pregnant, both of our parents lived out of state and we wanted something which would allow us to e-mail pictures to our families and to take baby pictures.
Pros: I bought the camera and found it very easy to use...
Pros: Great Pics!, up 128MB storage, excellent optical zoom, MANY extra features. Easy USB connection Cons: Must buy rechargeable batteries
and larger smart media card - although still a great buy
Like anything else you have to read manual and play with the camera a bit to uncover all the fine features that don't jump out at first. This camera takes wonderful pics.
It's easy to master and there are as many added features on this digital as...
Pros: Value and Quality Cons: Lack of features, and low res compared to some other models out there.
This Camera is good for the beginner digital photographer. It combines a style that looks and handles just like a regular 35 milimeter camera with a good quality LCD Screen, and easily connects to a PC with the software that comes with it. The software...
Pros: 1) Good pictures, easy to use and pretty good feature set. Cons: Usually hard to operate because of the lens cap.
I bought this camera recently. Most of the reviews are positive so I basically want to focus on the negatives first, because I missed following comments in most of the reviews:
1) Looks good to me except the sliding lens cap. The lens cap is...
Pros: simple, straightforward and excelent pictures Cons: hard to hook up to your computer
This is a great camera! This piece of hardware is so simple you cold put it in front of a monkey and in seconds get a portrait of the beautiful amazon rain forest. The only thing a monkey couldn't do is hook it up to PC (assuming he had one).

Pros: Great pictures, crisp LCD display, better zoom than most 2.1's at this price Cons: Instruction manual not on target for start up
This is my first digital camera so I didn't want to go overboard on price for the sake of super quality on my first try. This camera has hit the target on picture quality as well as being economical since it uses a universal smart card and reader to...
Pros: Great pics, 2.1 mp, inexpensive, nice optics, easy to use, lens protected Cons: no (internal) rechargeable batteries, no date stamp on pic, exposed view screen
We use the D-510 for photos on construction sites. It is compact, easy to use, and takes great pics. The controls are easy to use, and placement of the zoom toggle and shutter buttons is ideal. The slide cover for the lens activates the photo mode on...
This is a great camera, even a beginner can use it with ease. Takes crisp, clear photos. Easy to use menu, and photo review. Card is easy to get at and transfer from camera to computer, or printer. Will be hard to find a better digital. My teenager have...
I just bought this camera at Best Buy and it doesn't work. Out of the box, it (1) does not display pictures on the LCD monitor, (2) will not display the menu system, and (3) the diopter adjustment, no matter how you adjust it, never makes the optical...
I loved this camera, but after breaking twice I give up on it. When it worked it took great pictures. But it failed once, sent it in for repairs ~$120 and 6 weeks and a 30 day warranty. Then a few months after that went to turn it on, and it is dead again. Camera was never abused, and always carried in a case. Olympus says they will fix it for $120 again, but I just purchased a new camera with a full warranty.
Pros: Sharp pictures ! Good price. Cons: Flash delay takes getting used to.
Had this camera a year and dropped it a few times and it still works fine. Takes a bit to learn the buttons. And you can't preview what you just took without shutting the lens. But the lens is better protected than other digital cameras. It does take very excellent high quality pictures ! Took it to the beach and no sand got in it.
We added a 128meg card into it and have never filled it up. Sold the 16 meg card to a friend with an older digital camera.
I use rechargable Ni-Mh batteries with it and it is easy to swap out the 4 AA batteries. I keep 4 in the charger at home and 4 in the camera at all times. Do not keep the camera plugged into the computer too long as I think it drains the batteries. Over all this is a good middle priced camera and saves tons on photo printing costs. My granparents have email ! *smile
Great camera to start with! by adamrena ,Mar 10 '05
Pros: very easy to use. all buttons and doors open smoothly. easy to transfer pics Cons: Settings reset when you close the viewfinder. You have to redo everything.
I bought this in 2000-2001 and it has served me well. Upgrading now to 8m-pixel machine. I would buy an Olympus again because of the great experience and quality track record of the company.
Outdated, But a Good 2MP Purchase by craigtwall ,Jun 16 '06
Pros: Optical Zoom, Good Quality 4x6 prints, decent fine-tuning options Cons: A little heavy; movie mode substandard; 2.0MP only good for 4x6 prints
First introduced in 2002, Olympus' D-510 model has been a camera I've gotten consistent use out of since my purchase of it about two years ago.
The Good:
-- Good Optical Zoom function
-- Good 4x6 size prints
-- Decent options for fine-tuning quality, including changing the exposure (light/dark) setting, timed mode, changing speeds, even if the Automatic mode does well 90% of the time.
The Mediocre:
-- By today's standards, SmartMedia is difficult to find, especially compared with the much more standard SD cards.
-- Digital Zoom is okay, but rarely recommended if you want to maintain good picture quality.
-- The camera is fairly bulky, especially compared to today's models. This is not a "pocket it and forget it" sized camera
-- While 4x6 prints are fine, 5x7 prints start to show only decent quality, and 8x10 photos begin to show a little bit of pixellation.
The Bad:
-- The movie mode is very substandard. The quality is poor enough to be considered more form than function.

was impressed with D390 (previous model). D510 LCD screen cost min $140 to repair/Sending letter to Olympus The D-390 takes better pictures and better protection on LCD screen. I wonder if mine has defect. Makes a motor sound when zooming in/out. Email response on complaint not positive.
I received my Olympus D-510... by steve_dt3007 ,Mar 21 '02
I received my Olympus D-510 for Christmas 2001. At first I did not think I needed a digital camera, however, since Christmas I have about 1000 images (stored locally on my file server). At work I use a professional digital camera and the D-510 although not in the professional league, takes pictures wonderfully. There are a myriad of settings available to customize for different shoots. I only have one complaint and that is the battery consumption, but there was a sale on AA batteries at the PriceClub and now I don't mind. I highly recommend this camera for the entry-mid level photographer.
This camera is from a line of similar cameras which were better designed. Its nice new features are the 2.1 MPixel and its USB port.
Unfortunately, the design of the lid is sloppy, the operating software is restrictive and the 8MB SmartCard that comes with it totally insufficient. On HQ - the default - that card stores 16 pictures. You need at least 64MB.
The lid open the camera but sticks out to the right of the camera. I am constantly knocking it and turning off the camera unintentionally.
2.1 MPixel is nice, but too much for many application. The files are 400 to 500 MB and sending files this big over a dial-up connection takes too long. So one can set the picture quality to Standard. But if you turn the camera off (whether intentionally or not) and back on, it is back to High Quality. The camera will not memorize your last setting. Very annoying!
Nice camera comparable to other... by diddle_dt3000 ,Mar 12 '02
Nice camera comparable to other brands in this price range. Cover slides over lens for protection and is easily used. Auto and manual exposure modes. If you care to read the manual you will find that camera can be set to hold your favorite settings or set to reset settings to factory default when camera is shutdown. Very nice for the price and very satisfied! Uses AA batteries so can purchase rechargable.
I tried this camera out and ended up returning it. I was not that happy with the images. What I disliked the most was that when I turned it off, it defaulted out of my preferred settings, so I had to reset them again when I turned the camera back on.
Overall a good camera; however,... by bulldog_dt3000 ,Apr 28 '02
Overall a good camera; however, lcd should be better protected - broke mine already - need repair ($120 min chg by Olympus)(still works w/o lcd). hard to figure out flash off. Next time, ask about lcd display durability when buying.
I wanted a camera that was easy to use for my wife and enough manual overides to keep me interested. This camera fits the bill. I have read that you cannot save the settings when you turn off the camera. Not true. I have read that It is hard to figure out how to download pictures. Not true. I have read that you cannot view pictures unless you turn off the camera. Not true. I agree that there should be a full printed set of instructions. However this does not seem to help the majority of people that cannot program a VCR. If you cannot figure out all the features, buy a simpler camera. I love mine. Just buy some rechargeable batteries as you do with any camera in this price range.
Overall the price -per features... by sdteacher_dt3000 ,Mar 29 '02
Overall the price -per features is excellent & the imaging is great for the price as well. The USB Auto Connect feature is great- This is the most hassle free way yet to get your photos into your computer & then into an image editing program. I REALLY like the fact that this camera is crossplatform(MAC & PC) Since I need to use both in my work and at home! Its a nice small size, but not the most attractive looking camera out there, but one of the best priced for what you get!
I love my new camera. Really easy to use with simple instructions, even a few basic photo tips for an amateur like me. Plug the included USB cable into your computer, a couple clicks and the pictures are on your computer or simply do cut and paste. The Camedia software was a little confusing trying to figure out how to layout pictures on a sheet of paper but worked ok after a few trys. I printed an 8x10 picture, taken with HQ setting, on glossy paper using my Canon S300 printer (2400x1200) and it's as sharp as any 8x10 photo I've ever taken. You can save your settings - there is a hold option on one of the menus. I compared quite a few cameras over the internet, and couldn't find anything close to this price with optical zoom and the variety of resolution settings.
I have used this camera for 8 months. The picture quality is outstanding. I use it every day, doing field inspections. I can print out a photo in less than 5 minutes, and I always get rave reviews. If you buy rechargeable batteries and the AC power supply, you can extend usage 5 times normal. Very cost effective.
This review, alas, is a post-mortem and part of my grieving process (take my advice and NEVER DROP A CAMERA!). I owned it for about a year, and though I resisted all the new technology, I became very attached to it. It takes great pictures and was easy to transition to from an Olympus Stylus Zoom. It also takes 15-second Quicktime movies, which the specs don't mention on this site! If you purchase this camera, I also recommend getting two sets of NIMH batteries ($10 ea.) and a NIMH recharger (about $25) - it's a good system. Then ask for a 128 SmartMedia card for Christmas ($69), and then there's nothing you can't do. Also, if you're thinking about going digital, prepare yourself for all the time it takes to sort, edit, upload and print photos. I'm overjoyed to see it at these prices - we bought it for nearly $500! Thanks Dealtime.
First experience with digital camera... by double_a_dt3000 ,Nov 12 '02
First experience with digital camera besides observing others and hearing comments by owners of other cameras. D-510 Zoom is a great camera whether you are entry level or moving up from the lower end. I keep a USB cable permanently connected to my computer for immediate downloading. Makes sending photo images a breeze via e-mail.
I agree that one of the previous negative reviews is not well informed. This camera really does have a lot of features for this price point. Although, I do understand why that person wrote a negative review - a detailed manual is not printed. Not only are the features not obvious, you have to do a little research using additional files on the provided CD to learn to do things like save your preferences. I am an experienced photographer and wanted a point and shoot until the prices on the professional systems come down. I am very happy. Other than the lack of good instructions, I think the camera is easy to use once you understand it. Even without the manual, you should be able to figure out how to get it to work at least at a basic level. My five year old has it mastered. I just wish I had used Dealtime to research the price before I bought it. $299 in March 2002. Buy NiMH batteries and a 128MB card. Another $80 or so. It is worth it for 250 hi res photos. Good luck.
I researched digital cameras for... by jim1372_dt3000 ,Mar 19 '02
I researched digital cameras for nearly a month before I decided to purchase the Olympus D-510. This camera offers more features, by far, than any other camera in it's price range including 2.1 megapixels, video clips, output to television, night picture mode, and more. I have only one complaint: Olympus must put more memory with their cameras! This is a problem with all camera manufacturers (with the exception of 1 or 2). They make money selling accessories....so relax people it's just business!! Despite other reviews I've read on this camera....the Lens cover is a very intelligent and sleek design and it DOES NOT stick out from the side of the camera!!! I wish people would right accurate reviews!! One other tip...buy some rechargeble batteries. Other than that this camera takes great pics and has it all! EXCELLENT BUY!!
Very suprised at the quality... by batman_dt3000 ,Dec 03 '02
Very suprised at the quality of the pictures taken. With the Olympus software the Panoramic shots turned out great and seamless, was even able to use the panoramic feature to put my wife and myself into a single shot with only one of us in the scene at a time or even make myself into a twin. Bought rechargeable NiMH batteries to solve my battery usage problems.
