Good for its day, but now overshadowed

by zanderson1977 , Nov 07 '04
Pros: Lens is good glass, good level of manual control
Cons: 4x isn't enough zoom, system adapters cost big $$, max shutter is 650
I have used this model in a professional capacity for over a year now, mainly for shooting high school sports (both indoor and outdoor). It is almost on par with a film SLR in terms of control. The main things this camera lacks are a longer reach (zoom ...

Sorry to Say, but not a winner for Olympus

by justinsdaddy Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 1000, Aug 13 '03
Pros: Crisp Viewfinder, Strong 4X Zoom
Cons: Not a true SLR, SLOW Shutter Speeds, Bulky, Heavy
The 5 megapixel E20N doesn’t correct the limits in the design of the E10. The Olympus engineers miss ...

OLYMPUS - E20N Digital Camera

by marty100 , Feb 25 '03
Pros: Easy to use, with feel and weight of 35mm pro-SLR.
Cons: Battery life is short when using the LCD color screen viewfinder or built-in flash.
This camera has a lot to offer for amateur or semi-pro photographer looking for high resolution digital photos. I purchased this product to be able to take many pictures of my preschool kids without paying for the one hour drug-store photo service...

E-20N

by photo_doug , Jun 17 '02
Pros: Very tough, Fantastic lens, well laid out controls and features
Cons: slow to write to card, heavy after a while of handling
I've taken over 3,500 images with it using a pair of Gigabyte cards. The camera performs flawlessly. I bought it specifically for portrait and wedding work. It's exactly what is needed. The lens is fast, the body very tough, the controls are easy to...

All in one stunner

by ognek , Apr 09 '03
Pros: Great ergonomics, solid built and feel, fast lens.
Cons: Difficult to focus in low light and hard to see viewfinder.
Having owned this camera for around 2 months now, here are what I have to say about this:

Pros:

1. Cost - at under $1500 I get a 5 megapixel AF Digital SLR with a fast F2.0-2.4 lens. Even with the recently released Canon 10D, the...

Olympus Camedia e20n Paperweight?
by scamfighter ,Jan 20 '06
Pros: camera nice to look at, seal in resin for a nice $3,000 paperweight.
Cons: Auto-focus malfunction since purchase. Camera painfully slow disk writing. NO refund for undelivered part
This $3,000CDN camera is far beneath the capacity or capability of its stated quality. Camera is VERY slow to write to disk. Must stop after the fourth picture for up to 2 minutes to write to the disk. This is totally unacceptable for a professional series camera at this upper price range. Camera has never been able to focus. Auto-focus has never worked and takes blurry pictures. All communications to Olympus regarding these issues have been ignored. Batteries run out after very short period....very unreliable for outdoor photography. Landscapes are washed out and colors distorted. Brings LOTS of batteries!

I did drop the battery compartment and it shattered. Sent Olympus International Money order to Huppauge, NY. Never delivered the product as I requested and paid for. Refund for part was promised, but after two months still never received. I can not in good conscious recommend either this camera or the parts and service staff for Olympus America. Most of their employees struggle with basic English...Bad camera, no response to complaints, and finally. NO refund for a part ordered and paid for but never delivered. This camera and the company are BAD news.

Great SLR Digital Camera
by jolaine ,Jan 05 '04
Pros: Quality is excellent! It is easy to handle.
Cons: The battery life isn't great, and the shutter speed does slack a little.
The body of this camera is a lot like the traditional SLR, but with all the digital advantages. Some say it is too bulky, but not if you are use to using a traditional SLR.

Hight quality camera
by jwahaus ,Sep 28 '03
Pros: Sturdy build quality, high quality optics, high quality final image.
Cons: Flash write speed is a bit slugish.
I'm very pleased with my e-20. For the money
there is still nothing better out there. Yes, the more
expensive professional SLR cameras edge it out a little
but again, for the money there is nothing better.

The 35mm-140mm (35mm equ.) f2.0 lens is a great lens
for shooting low/available light.

This is one camera that feels and operates alot like a
traditional 35mm film camera.

OK for snapshots
by iggleswhyth ,Jan 01 '05
Pros: See review
Cons: See review
I'm a semi-pro photographer. I picked this up after reading numerous favorable reviews. It is just fine as a high end vacation camera but leaves a lot to be desired for portraiture and studio use. This camera has sent me back to film. I now use it only to proof the lighting prior to shooting with a 35mm or 120mm film camera.

Pros:

Relatively cheap, drives studio strobes (why I bought it), nice zoom, good auto focus, TTL viewfinder (I cannot stand LCD viewfinders), lighted status screen.

Cons:

Poor sensitivity to dark colors, you will notice that virtually every shot, regardless of the subject has a boost in the center of the histogram. Abominably slow transfer speed to the compact flash; TIFF is completely unusable because it takes so long. Auto white balance is a nightmare. If you buy this camera use one of the preset WB settings or your colors will shift all over the place. After a year of heavy use all compact flash cards failed to work for a week. Tried inserting, removing jiggling, etc. but no dice. All cards worked fine in other cameras. Finally
it just started working again.

As for optic quality and sharpness, my 11x14 prints are as good as any medium format film camera I've shot. Those who dis this machine should take the time and learn how to shoot digital. Pay attention to camera movement. Invest in a monopod!

by yehuda_paradise_dt3000 ,Jun 29 '02
Had the E-20 now for 5 months and getting used to it by degrees. In program mode, results are more or less on run-of-the-mill photo processing lab levels, but with some thoughtful adjustments you can expect nearly professional 8 by 10s (depending, of course, on your printer). Built-in buffer is too small for sequential shooting, unless you're willing to sacrifice quality. Some distortion at extreme wide-angle, but you can live with it. All in all, the best option for under $3000.

by fredf_dt3000 ,Nov 28 '02
The E20-P is a professional camera with however certain limitations. Poor lens quality, especially the wide-angle site of the zoom is one. With extra work and software, the barrel distorsion and color dispersion can be corrected. But you have to live with a low burst rate. You have to wait .5 sec after each pic, 4 pics in a row is max, then you must wait for about 30 seconds!
