I bought one and in a few months it locked up. I returned it to the store and got a new one. Less than a year later it broke. I would never expect plastic to last forever, but I would have expected it to last longer than it did.
My 4 year old likes to help cook. He pinched his hand in the spinner. Clean up id difficult, the basket is sharp and it has cut my hand a few times, paper type cuts. The top doesn't stack well for drying. It only stacks well upside down which doesn't dry well, it falls off my drying rack.
Does this thing even work? by plumberchef ,Jun 28 '09
Pros: None Cons: everything
I had a Zyliss spinner which worked well until it broke and I thought I would try a diffrent brand. The Oxo seemed like a good design but when I brought it home and tried it it did not work at all. when you push down on the pump it pushes the salad basket into the bottom of the bowl and it stops. I read the instructions did what it said. and it still did not work at all. if you are really careful and pump the pump lightly you can get the thing spinning but it is impossible to get it to spin fast enough to dry anything even one piece of lettice. Most of the reviews for this product are positive. Maybe they have the stainless model. I dont know. But this thing is the worst piece of kitchen equipment I have ever bought. Do they even do product testing any more? I will be returning this piece of crap as soon as I can.
The Best Spinner Ever!! by kitchengirl1 ,Jun 16 '08
Pros: quick and easy lettuce, spinach, anything cleaner Cons: NONE
I have owned one of these for years and always give it as a wedding shower gift. It's the best spinner on the market. We have a large garden and I can use it to wash, bib lettuce, green beans, radishes, any small produce item.
I LOVE THIS SPINNER. In many years of usage it has never malfunctioned once.
The famous pump mechanism broke after a few energetic uses. The Oxo design has too many parts and pieces which can't be easily disassembled to clean or dry. This will eventually result in mold growth which isn't exactly sanitary.
It's a great gadget until it breaks and more trouble than it's worth to clean. I prefer the Zyliss spinner which has a simpler design. And the hydroponically grown bibb lettuce I use doesn't require washing and drying anyway.
In the professional French kitchen lettuce leaves were often gathered in a clean tea towel with a length of string and spun around in the air. Not a bad technique.
Non-functioning mechanism by islandgurl17 ,Sep 29 '08
Pros: The spinning mechanism was easier on arthritic hands than the other models. Cons: When the spinner mechanism mal-functions, there is no straight-forward or obvious solution.
OXO Lettuce Spinner I brought this great spinner back from NJ, in its original box, in a hardshell suitcase, and the spinner was locked down, then when I tried to open the mechanism, the spring under the spinner mechanism came apart. I cannot get the double-wall top to snap together, and the entire works on top is non-functioning. Now, how to get a lid replacement....... I really loved this spinner - maybe only works great in New Jersey.....
