DRW-500 Has serious problems with DVD R
by kthatcher ,Dec 30 '06
Pros: Has good Playback, Remote control operates well, Auto Open/Close is nice Cons: Destroys DVDs easily, I spent 6 hours recording a DVD that the unit destroyed
The Sanyo DVD recorder seems to have good features, but certain actions will turn the recorded DVDś into coasters. This product was a gift from my wife, bought primarily for the price. Recording is easy, and plays DVD with good quality video and sound. However, for people using the device to record, beware!
Finalizing a DVD R seems to render it inoperable. This is not just this player, it seems common -- use an Internet search to see others.
Also, renaming the DVD causes the DVD to be rejected by the unit. Rejection is either the LCD display being blank and the unit not responding, or ejecting the DVD. Renaming individual videos will also sometimes cause the DVD R to be rendered inop.
Certain DVD recorded on the system cause the system to display flashing multi-colored screens when inserted.
I have not had any trouble with commercially recorded DVDs we have purchased -- just DVD recorded on the system

Sanyo DRW 500
by paulms ,Oct 09 '07
Pros: Very durable and extremely well priced. Erases RW dvd's like a charm. Cons: Poorly written manual. Experimented with remote to figure out getting set-up menu.
After having gone through 2 other DVD recorders AFTER having purchased this one, I'm definitely giving this one 2 enthusiastic thumbs up.

For the money it's very good...
by orionshallrise ,Oct 17 '05
Pros: Easy installation, fairly easy start up, records very well. Cons: 24hr. clock only, only 1-time recording settings
I found this at a garage sale for $40. It works fine for the purpose that I wanted it for. The previous owner told me he couldn't get the disc to work in any other DVD player, but this particular one. Within 3 minutes I found out the reason for that. DVD +RW disc will finalize the recording automatically after recording. However DVD +R disc do not finalize after recording ergo the only DVD that will read it will be the DRW-500. The solution is easy though. In the set up you tell the system to finalize the disk. It has progressive scan so that is a plus. It may not have all the premium bells and whistles, but for the price I paid for it I find it a very good machine.

Great Value for its price

Pros: Cheap and easy-to follow set up directions. Cons: Menus are not easy to find.
This DVD recorder has worked fine for me. At first the disks would not play on other dvd players but that was because I didn't finalize them. It took me a while to find out how to finalize them because you have to press stop twice and then setup. The first dvd+r disks that I bought work fine. The only problem I have with it is recently our I-robot went underneath our tv stand and scraped the bottom of this dvd player. When I went to turn the player on, the display and all the buttons on the front were fried. Other than that, the DVD player still works and I have been able to record many of my home videos since.
