Lives Up to the Hype But Beware of the "Gotchas" by cpexpert ,Jun 29 '07
Pros: Set up is quick. No monthly fees. Quality is excellent. Cons: I found a list of 11 gotchas at www.slingboxguide.com.
The Slingbox lives up to its hype, working exactly as advertised. Across the Internet, Slingbox customers consistently rate the device 4.5 stars (or more) out of 5.
While the Slingbox delivers on its promise, there is one thing that is helpful to ahead of time.
First, if you have high-definition video or your homes Internet connection is nowhere near your video equipment, you may need to buy adapters and/or cables that could add from $50-$150 to the price of your Slingbox if you want to watch in HD remote.
Pros: Just works. Does exactly what it's supposed to. Cons: None so far.
I've got a standard DirecTv with TiVo setup. I also have a basic wifi setup at home with my DSL going through my router to my wifi access point. I figured i might have to do some router jiggering in order to get it to work remotely. The setup utility did ~everything~ for me. I ran the setup and everything just "works". My laptop works my TiVo remotely, no problem. I also installed the WinMobile v1.0 client on my Moto Q, and it also just "works". Now when I'm travelling next week to see my family, I'll be able to log in to my TiVo box while I'm bored in the airport & watch whatever I want on my phone, instead of spending $30 on all those magazines I don't really want anyway.
Setup was a brainless process & I'm very happy so far. Just the way things should be.
