I've been surprised lately at the number of series I've read that improved over time. The traditional thought that the first book of the series is the best and subsequent books decrease in quality doesn't seem to hold true these days.
Pros: Pace, character, author's knowledge is physics. Cons: Protagonist is larger-than-life, too-good-to-be-true.
