The Whistler DE-1788 was my first purchase in radar detectors. I had researched and reviewed many Whistler and Cobra models. I was still on the fence about which brand I wanted to buy when I walked into Radio Shack and saw that this model was on sale. ...
Pros: Wireless (can run on 4 AA batteries alone). Cons: You can't always hear it very well. Doesn't work for long car rides.
It's a little larger than I'm used to in a detector, but it is still workable for a truck or SUV. It has a blue backlit display with a black text LCD. The silver accents and chrome plastic buttons are a nice touch. I purchased this unit from ...
Pros: Cordless w/4 NiMH batteries so it's always on. Rated #2 behind Escort Solo. Cons: Still new to me - Could be louder
This is my first radar detector, and I've only had it a few days (9/2/06). I wanted one that was cordless because I thought it would be easier to manage. I like to research things and was able to find a review that gave it 4 Stars (but qualified ...
Pros: Minimum false alerts, Cordless is great. Many features. Cool blue LCD read out. Cons: Winshield bracket is not very good. Need to replace batteries with good quality rechargeable batteries.
I purchased my 1788 used and I think its a great radar detector. For those of you that are not satisfied with this unit, you may have got a bad one or you need to go and purchase a 500.00 radar detector if that will make you happy. I have owned many ...
This radar detector is junk by carlsbad ,Dec 04 '06
Pros: Not sure given that it broke after 2 uses Cons: Heavy, cheaply made, falls apart
This radar detector broke after 2 uses. It is heavy, the batteries don't charge very well, the bracket holding the unit to the window is very fragile and broke almost immediately. Additionally, the unit will turn it self off after several hours of driving even though hooked up to car lighter.
Not as good as radartest.com says... by h0tb0y6996 ,Mar 22 '07
Pros: Wireless, attractive display, easy to read, nice colors Cons: False alarms, grabs all telephone lines in all modes, slow reaction time, heavy with batteries.
I've been using an old model for years now, whistler 1675 compass. it has the least amount of false alarms. I've never gotten a ticket with it for over 6 years. Well my wife drives a lot also, thought it'd be time to get her a radar. I bought this 1788 at COMPUSA for $85. it's nice, people who REVIEWD this product man handled the bracket, i use the bracket everyday with my whistler 1675, idiots...they obviously dont depress the lock button to unlock it. thats why they break it.
My Whistler 1675 compass is 10x better than this model of 1788. 1788 has too many false alarms, no matter what mode u put it in. i turn off xband all together and the ka band goes nuts for every powerline/telephone line i pass. so i dont know if CHP/sheriffs/police are running radar or coming towards me or behind me. so i stopped using this. NOT WORTH $130, im still trying to find an older model since they pick up the least false alarms.
It is much better, than some people think about it by master-r ,Dec 17 '07
Pros: Attractive display, fine types of sound alerts, handy shape, good POP detection. Cons: Ugly, not handy horn for laser detection:)
Whistler started with radars for marine corps and all products made by this company are not cheaply made, but made like military kind. I tried Cobra XRS 9930 and prefer Whistler 1788, less false alarms. Reliable. Cool display and sound alerts. Sound volume OK (just switch off "Quiet" mode). Possible to use cord, if batteries low (better remove them in that case). Turn off display light and use detector for over 20 hours without cord. Really number 2 in the world among detectors with batteries. People are not honest giving one, two or three stars to this detector, that is why I give five stars.
Excellent Radar Detector at a good price by flashvette ,Oct 19 '08
Pros: Good range, Great Price, Minimal false alarms, Excellent volume Cons: Winshield mount not very good, cordless battery terminals not good
I purchased a used Whistler 1788 radar detector. I feel its a good radar detector. It picks up K, Ka and Laser very good. I live in Tampa Bay, Florida and there are so many speed traps all over. Especially in the construction zones where the speed limit drops and the fines are double. I was on US 19 and the car ahead was hit with laser. My whistler picked it up with no problem. I also encountered another speed trap with K band. The Whistler 1788 alerted me about one mile before I saw the cop. The winshield mount is no good, but its found a comfortable place on my dash. I feel the sensitivity it very good and I dont get many false alarms. When it alerts me I pay attention. If you dont have 300.00 to spend on a radar detector then this unit will do the job.
