Pros: Tough, solid. Strong engines and passable looks. Great for work or hauling people around. Cons: Can guzzle gas, best avg mileage (mixed driving) is 20mpg. Top-heavy. The Bottom Line: Exactly what it represents itself to be. If mileage is not your chief concern it's hard to find something that can beat it in all categories.
Hello again friends, beautiful day in the neighborhood isn't it? I thought I would brighten your day with a review of the 1997 Ford Explorer, Eddie Bauer edition. So let's get to it! The Explorer to me has always been a pretty plain vehicle. As I ...

Pros: Extremely good looking vehicle with power to spare! Tough! Cons: too many repairs
I bought this vehicle after previously owning a 1992 Explorer XLT 4WD V6.
I knew I wanted another Explorer, but didn't think I could afford a 1997. The saleslady was smart enough to head me towards a newer (1997) version than I thought I could...

Pros: V8, AWD, Combination Door Locks Cons: gas mileage
I was used to driving vans and was ready for a change. I wanted a SUV and wasn't sure which way to go. So the search began. Since I didn't have to have something right away I took the luxury of shopping around. I was sure I wanted 4WD and started...

Pros: Powerful, good for mountains or off-road terrain. Cons: TERRIBLE gas mileage, lots of problems need repairing, pollution. The Bottom Line: Well, if you like bad gas mileage, bad craftsmanship, and the typical Ford problems, this is the car for you. Otherwise, go elsewhere.
I used to have this car. Note the "used to" part. It was sold for a much nicer Honda Accord. The first thing you notice while test driving the '97 Explorer is how bumpy the ride is. The shocks are a little too hard, even for an SUV. Going over...

Pros: Very good looking suv, nice color combnation, eddie bauer eddtion. Very powerful V8 Cons: Very bumpy ride on bad street roads The Bottom Line: great suv, wherther for short or long trips. Holds a lot of cargo.Just a little bumpy ride.
I was lucky finding this used suv with 10,000 miles on it. I have a lot of options like a lcd
computer that monitors all the function in its screen, like gas mileage, miles until next gas
stop, and when I need the next oil change. Out side...

Pros: Strong V8. Good pick up. Roomy interior. Good crash test rating. Cons: Poor gas mileage. Below average construction. Above average front-end issues. The Bottom Line: As with any major purchase, I suggest that consumers do their research before purchasing any vehicle.
I really regret having purchased this SUV. Everything in the front end has required replacement, with the exception of the left front axle thus far, on my Explorer. It has 52,000 miles, and has always (and still is garage kept) in excellent condition...

1997 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer AWD V8 still rolling after 10 years

Pros: Very dependable, holds retail value Cons: Transfer-case, power windows (usual wear)
I purchased this vehicle in 2003, making the SUV a two-owner vehicle. With 160,000 (+) miles, she's still rolling down the road. With only minor scuffles (rebuilt transfer-case, power window malfunction), and the usual vehicle wear (brakes, tires, etc), the vehicle lives up to its manufacturer's claim...built FORD TOUGH! My leather is still blemish-free (other than the wrinkles that ALL leather develops over time), the power moonroof still rolls like the day out of production, and I will keep her until 200,000 (+) miles. Very dependable, reliable, and overall a very good SUV. I look to buy another Ford SUV after the 200,000 mile-mark.

Pros: combination door lock, space, Cons: Transmission
We got our 97 Ford Explorer with about 4000 miles, It was nice loved the combination door lock, high of the floor and space. After 6 years at 60.000 miles the transmission went bad on us. Took it to a small garage and that was a disaster, charged us $1000.00 for a re-biuld transmission, took for ever to fix it and drove it for about 9 months and it went bad again, the mechanic didn't even wanted to take it back. So, we trade it in. I missed and liked my ford explorer, Not the transmission.

Pros: reliability Cons: heating and air trouble
ok well lets just start out saying i dont know what that other guy was talking about. the explorer really isnt that bad a gas mileage. under my normal driving conditions i used to get around 17-18 miles per gallon, but now i have put 31 inch super swamper tires on it and i still get around 15. it helps to know figures when the car has an onboard screen that will tell you your average. i have had good results out of my explorer and it still runs and drive perfectly fine at 123,000 miles. i have experience with haveing heating and a/c trouble. the only thing while having this explorer that i wished i could have had, was if they would have put a low gear in them.
