Pros: Economical to own, dependable, well-built. A competent economy car. Cons: Road noise, low-ish MPG, lack of a center armrest and factory equipped in-dash CD. The Bottom Line: If purchase price, running costs, and dependability are concerns, this is a great choice!
In December of 2007 I bought a '97 Mercury Tracer LS wagon. I've only owned the car for about 2 months and 4k miles now, but I'm very satisfied with the car so far. I bought it to replace my poorly aging '89 Chrysler Lebaron convertible that was ...

Pros: Inexpensive, good MPG, compact car Cons: buzzing noise, very sensitive pedals
Even though it is not the best car on the market, it is a nice little car for the supersaver. Having the same characteristics of the Ford Escort, the '97 Mercury Tracer comes with almost everything you need for a decent price.
Some features...

Pros: Inexpensive, reliable Cons: Sensitive accelerator The Bottom Line: Great and reliable, especially for the price.
I got this car when I was in college because I liked how it drove and it was inexpensive enough that I could make the car payments.
It has done just that. Any rational person should know by looking at the price that it's not going to drive...

Pros: good gas mileage, handles well, low price Cons: not a roomy car
I bought this car new mostly because of the price. I was at a Credit Union sale where I wasn't hassled by car dealers and all cars were offered at the lowest prices. I hadn't researched Tracers but it caught my eye because of the design, and after I...

Pros: great engine Cons: donut spare
In January 98 I helped my sister select a new used car. The car that she ended up picking was a 97 Tracer with around 30,000 miles on it. The Tracer had a lower price tag than several other cars on the lot that had more miles on them and were older. In...

Pros: smooth ride, quick acceleration, easy to use instrument panel Cons: squeaky radio, brake pads giving way, heavy gas pedal
As a student entering college in fall of '97, it was time to trade off my 92 Tempo for something new. I got a blue 97 Tracer. Three years later, I still drive it every day and it is an excellent car.
It accelerates pretty fast for such a...

Pros: Reliability, gas mileage, room Cons: bad seats, strange radio/climate controls The Bottom Line: If you can find one in good shape for cheap, get it, it will last you a LONG time if taken care of.
Being poor and in college is pretty normal throughout the US. When I was in college all I could afford was a 1997 Tracer. This car is pretty decent, and is a step up from the Ford Escort or Aspire which is in the same price range as this car. Sure, it ...

Pros: handles fine Cons: can't think of any
I got mine in Nov. 97, as a present from my grandfather, and haven't had any problems with it. I had to rent a car for a week once, and so I knew how this particular vehicle felt and handled. Very comfortable, not bad pick up, and easy to drive. ...

Pros: Peppy engine, solid ride, economical, good ergonomics. A small person or a women's car. Cons: Not much leg room in the back if you push the driver seat back.
We bought our 1997 Mercury Tracer used about a year and a half ago as a second car, mainly for my wife who is 4'11". It is an ideal car for a a smaller person. The driver seat slides far enough forward for her to be comfortable - a drawback,...

I have purchased a 1997 purple Mercury Tracer. So far, I am enjoying this car. I wanted a reliable car. It runs quietly, but squeaks a little when I apply breaks, but otherwise, no problems. The only thing that has happened so far is that I had to...

Pros: definitely the reliability, and also the MPG! Cons: Cheaper feel compared to luxury cars, uncomfortable seats, touchy gas pedals.
I have had my tracer for the past 6-7 years, it has 120K miles on it. The only problem I have had with it was about 2,000 miles ago I got a new muffler. And Ive gone through a couple sets of break pads, but, I drive in traffic jams a lot so that is a given. I loved this car even though it had touchy gas pedals, and not the most comfy seats. It was great on gas, and had decent acceleration. It was definitely not a luxury car, but for the 13,000 bucks i bought it for 7 years ago, it has been extremely reliable and worth the money. My grandmother passed away and I now drive her new car. I am very sad to sell my Tracer, but it'll make someone as happy as me!

Pros: Size, handling, price Cons: No leg room!! No power locks or windows!
I just finished high school and this is my first car that I bought with my money. My main reason for buying this particular car was the price at $1000 and the low mileage of 39,800k.
This is not the dream car I always wanted. The engine is weak with only 110 horses. The acceleration is not that great. My car has no power features besides power mirrors. I still don't understand why ford would make a car without power windows or locks in 1997. I love the way the car handles, it's so much fun to zip around double parked cars. The biggest con is the roominess inside. I haven't experienced it, but my friends have told me that it's pretty uncomfortable in the back because of the lack of leg room. As for the stereo, I actually think the stock speakers are decent, I have only a radio but I did install an fm modulator to connect my ipod. Overall, this is a great first car for a teenager.
