Pros: Handling, fun, affordability, surprising practicality Cons: Loud, tight fit for people over 6', fussy boot cover The Bottom Line: Anyone looking for a sports car needs to benchmark a Miata. At this price its closest rival is the Toyota MR2 Spyder, but the Miata is the complete package.
When I first decided to drive the Miata, I wrongly had the preconceived notion that it's a limp, poseur of a sports car. A 'girly' car. In hindsight, I'm not sure why I felt so bigoted towards it. Perhaps it was the small size? Or the name. The irony is ...

Pros: Mazda, and part owner Ford, keeps listening and improving the Miata for the owner. Cons: Must space progeny by 16 years. Replace the 16 year old with baby. KEEP CAR. The Bottom Line: Mazda listened to the owners of the previous generation Miata and successfully improved one of the greatest roadsters of all time. The 2001 only gets better.
I am a Miataholic and I am powerless to change. The purpose of this opinion is to alert prospective convertible shoppers about the dramatic changes for the 2001 Miata. There is more power on tap, an optional 6 speed transmission, and an options package...

Pros: Fun, Fast, Excellent Handling, Sweet Exhaust note. Cons: Interior noise and lack of storage space. The Bottom Line: Pure fun and more grip than flypaper, this is an excellent sports car.
Mazda has got to be one of the best kept secrets in the automotive world. Mazda makes great cars. Sure they may be a little niche-y but given the choice, I’d rather have a Protégé than a Civic, or a Millenia S rather than an Accord. And so it goes...

Pros: Best buy, great looks, sharp handling, easy to use top Cons: No heated seats, needs more amenities The Bottom Line: I miss my own Miata! I've actually dreamt of owning this car again. Now, I've been renting it as much as I can whenever I travel.
I've been missing my 1999 Miata for quite some time now. I sold it a while back and have regretted it every since. So, whenever I get the chance, I rent Miata's as much as possible. As a consultant, we rent cars every time we are located outside of our...

Pros: world class handling and shifter, reliability, lots of fun per $ Cons: may not be fast enough for some, noise, small cockpit, jittery ride, no tilt steering The Bottom Line: If you're looking for a ear-to-ear smile and value a true driver oriented experience that will encourage a better driver out of you, look no further.
The Mazda MX-5 Miata is enjoying its twelfth year of production as a modern rejuvenation of the classic British sports car. After all these years, it's stayed true to its mission, offer a lightweight two seat roadster with modern reliability and back to...

Pros: Cute styling, fabulous handling, really connected with the car, alot of the car for money Cons: Hp bump would be nice, small size both good and bad in everyday driveability The Bottom Line: A great sportscar in all areas, sharp-looking, economical, a lot of bang for the buck, very high-quality feeling overall
The second generation of Miata is one of the purest essences of open-air motoring I believe that's out there. The way it's been engineered to handle like a go-kart, the way it's packaged as a minimalist roadster, the clean, classic styling, and the...

Pros: excellent handling, top down fun, loud sound system, good looking car, supportive seats Cons: storage capacity, too quiet, lack of feel through steering wheel The Bottom Line: to quote a motorsports reporter, "this car is therapy on wheels, everybody who drives one has a smile on their face"
I completely agree!
I currently own a 1989 honda crx si (see my review on that car) which is modified quite a bit for weekend racing purposes. It gets very good gas mileage (40mpg) and moves like stink. It represents a very raw ride in the sense that it is loud, every...

For 6 long years I've obsessed over this car. This small, two-seater roadster perfected by Mazda. Those Zoom Zoom campaigns just about killed me.... Before I begin, let me just warn you that I'm very biased about my new car. She's perfect. I've...

Pros: FUN! FUN! FUN! Great shifter and fantastic handling Cons: little short on power, but still incredibly fun The Bottom Line: Best Buy on any sports car out there....Nothing is as exhilarating for anywhere close to the same money...and its build quality and reliability is second to none.
This car is absolutely amazing. Nothing puts a grin on your face that is even close to this price. I have owned a 2000 Corvette, a 1995 NSX, a 2001 Jag XKR conv. and a host of others...the most pure fun I get is when I climb into my little Miata....

I've had my miata for less than a year but I LOVE IT TO DEATH. This car is great for the money with some minor drawbacks.
First is the interior. The seats are very comfortable, your body seems to fit into them very snug and they provide excellent...

Pros: Good looks, great ride, plenty of power, HANDLES LIKE ON RAILS!! Cons: Small, damn small, that's all. The Bottom Line: I would recommend test driving one to see how well you fit, and then buying one and driving it, daily. The car is FUN, dependable, and looks damn good too.
I love the Miata. No matter how many of my buddies tell me it is a "chick" car, I enjoy driving it. I still see them wishing they had a convertible to drive around in the beautiful fall weather. Although it is not made for everyone to drive, ie:...

Pros: Great handling, very responsive. Reliable. Easy maintenance. FUN! Cons: Insufficient firewall insulation - passenger compartment gets hot from engine. The Bottom Line: I would buy this car all over again. In fact, I like it better than the current Miata.

With great styling and a muscular look, the 2001 Miata is a fun drive for moving in and around the city. It's very quick on the street with good pick-up going down the road and great handling around corners. As a second car, this one tops the list. A...

The Mazda Miata is a great little car. I speak from experience of two friends actually. One friend has a 1991 Mazda Miata and another just bought a 2001. I have driven both cars quite often and I have to say if I didn't have my dreams set on a BMW M3 I...

A Blast to Drive

Pros: Short throw shifter, easy up and down top, turning radius, Bose sound system, FUN, FUN. Cons: just a liiiitle more horsepower/torque, No tilt wheel, needs another inch separating clutch and brake
If you are looking for the power and refinement of a Mercedes, BMW, or a Porsche - forget the Miata. While it's a bit more polished than the older Miatas, it's still just rough enough around the edges to be a hoot to drive without being overtly ostentatious. If you just want a fun-to-drive affordable convertible get it NOW. Pound for pound it can't be beat.

A Very Special Car

Pros: Handling, feeling of freedom, safety, brakes, good power, quality construction. Cons: Addictive..you'll want to drive it all the time.
I bought my 2001 Miata SE in June, 2004. It had 30,000 miles on it which is not bad for the price I paid. (I see Miatae advertised often with 180,000+ miles on them.) They seem to hold up really well. Only problem is that the more I drive it..the more addicted to it I become. It has great leather seats and wood steering wheel and chrome 16" mag wheels...very sticky Yokohama tires and a 6-speed that took a little time to get used to but now I love it. It's really a fun time machine. When I get in it I'm 57, but by the time I get home, after a drive in the mountains with the top down, I'm 25 again. Only thing I would add is maybe a little more horsepower, but that's available from the supercharger & turbo aftermarket vendors. I wouldn't want to use it as a weekday commuter in heavy, slow, traffic, but a real joy as a weekend getaway car.
