Pros: Excellent IDS capabilities offer more protection than a firewall alone. Cons: Some people may prefer the way that application protection is done in products like ZoneAlarm.
A firewall is an application that allows you to selectively block certain types of Internet traffic in order to minimise risks of hackers compromising your system. Even if you don't know it, it is likely that countless bored 12 year olds across in the...

Pros: Started out great in the beginning... Cons: Updates made my computer a nightmare!
I purchased this as a download last fall. Everything went fine, worked great until... when I would get the latest updates! One of the recent updates included a "Application Protection" that took over my C:drive and asked me every two seconds if I...

Pros: Good intrusion detection Cons: No outbound blocking, does not stealth all ports
I bought BlackICE and I liked it at first. It didn't slow down my cable modem connection even on the highest setting (Paranoid) and picked up numerous intrusion attempts. The support website gave good descriptions of each of the different attacks.

Pros: Yes, it detects incoming traffic Cons: Not instinctual to use
I tried using a firewall from Norton, but it wasn't compatible with my DSL connection....after struggling with it for a few days I had it removed, then I installed BlackICE Defender; it's compatible, so that's at least one good thing about.

Pros: Powerful, easy to use, doesn't block outbound traffic Cons: UI is a little crude.
I've been testing security systems for a while now. I got a cable modem installed at home about 3 years ago, and I knew I needed some kind of protection.
I've tried ZoneAlarm, Norton Personal Firewall, and even McAffee's Firewall. All of...

Pros: Are there any...? Cons: Stop sending me junk mail!!!
I was looking for a personal firewall and a few people on Epinions.com had recommended BlackICE Defender and so, although I normally like to find a download that is completely free, I thought I would try BlackICE for the 30 day free trial and then either...

Pros: Easy to use.
Has online advice for each attack.
Good graphical interface. Cons: Not freeware..
This is a firewall for the private person at home.
It has good features like blocking NetBIOS and File Sharing services that is a really security problem in Windows.
The graphical interface is one of the better seen in firewalls. It is pretty...

Pros: Loads quickly, barely noticeable, detailed advice online, stable, informative, helps maintain security Cons: Only monitors certain types of security risks, minor interface bugs,
Note: I have stopped using BlackICE because I am not willing to pay for it. It is, however, a good product that you should consider purchasing or downloading for the trial period.
BlackICE is a small utility which mainly monitors port...

Pros: Easy to use, effective. Cons: None to speak of.
Just as I was about to start writing this, the BlackIce icon in my tray started flashing. Hacker alert! Someone is trying to breach my system! I feel so violated..ewwww.
If you decide to finally throw away the security blanket of AOL and...

Pros: Provides a firewall for those using "always-on" ISP's. Cons: Can block some desireable web traffic.
s "always on" Internet connections (i.e., DSL, Cable) proliferate, the down side to the high-speed instant access looms as a greater security threat to individuals and small businesses than ever before. The dial-up modem was only open to hackers when...

Pros: Very good defender Cons: Still can be hacked
Black Ice is one of the best firewalls out there, in my opinion. Black ice has many options for users if they want to be very care, careful, or careless. The firewall can be disabled and it tracks everything that tries to get through you ports to hack...

Pros: very good security; easy to install and use; protects against well known viruses Cons: not free;
Yesterday I wrote an Opinion on Zone Alarm, the so called "hack free software". I made some good points that disproved the "hack free" philosophy for this product. Today it's all about The BlackICE Defender!
This is truly...

Pros: The warning (wav) file is somewhat annoying if you activate the sound feature for probes. Cons: Without a doubt, the leader of internet security software.
O.K., you're a telecommuter on the WWW. All of a sudden, without warning and without your knowledge, someone probes your computer; gathering information about your system, email, and hardware.
All is not lost. In addition to your virus...

Pros: keeps out wanna-be hackers Cons: -0-
Black Ice Defender is one of the best firewall protection systems on the market today, IMHO. As soon as it was installed I noticed 15 attacks come in to my network setup. (That compared to the boxes notification that 4-5 a day is...
