GE microwave died within two years
by vivekn ,Sep 19 '04
Pros: Simple to use. Worked well when it worked. Cons: Died within two years
This microwave oven came with the new house but it died within two years. Since our previous oven is still working, I am questioning the quality of GE microwave ovens. Even though the magnetron is covered under the warranty, technician visit and labor are not covered. Repair would cost lot more than buying a new one. Think twice before buying GE microwave ovens.

Junk - Don't buy
by ymoosa ,Jan 20 '07
Pros: Worked well until magnatron dies TWICE! Cons: Magnatron does not last.
Got this microwave new with our new house. It died about two years later - magnatron needed replacing. Because replacing the trim kit was so expensive, we opted to have it repaired. It cost ~$180! A year and a half later, the magnatron died again! We are now going to replace the microwave and trim kit with something else. Stay away from GE microwaves!

Just frustrating!
by rlin69 ,Sep 01 '05
Pros: Works well when it works Cons: Fails every two years.
Microwave oven came with new house. Magnetron tube died in two years. Had it fixed, and it died again. Called GE to see if there was a recall, but they were not very helpful.
Magnetron tube covered for 9 years, but labor and technician visit cost $180. Doesn't make sense to have it fixed. Consider it a lesson learned and don't buy GE again.
In addition, difficulty dealing with GE over the phone. Customer service said that if the problem was indeed the magnetron tube then there would be no cost (labor or visit). When the technician arrived he had a different story...the $180 dollar story. As such, they are still trying to charge me for the site visit. Trying to resolve with GE. What a headache.

Min Use and It Lasted for 7.5 Years
by r1040406 ,Nov 28 '07
Pros: There were no problems with the oven until Thanksgiving 2007 when it stopped working. Cons: GE Help Line poor service.
GE web-site cannot provide replacement Model to fit "hole".
It broke on Thanksgiving day. I was on a mission to find one that would "fit in the hole" at 6 AM on Black Friday so the family was not inconvenienced. That was an adventure that there is not enough space in this block to describe. GE Help line was incredibly rude when I asked for a replacement equivalent to fit in the hole. The GE web site is not set up to answer that question either. I bought a competitor table top model for $79.00 but still have to deal with the "hole". The GE JE1640 oven worked from June 24, 2000 when the builder's installed oven was first turned on until November 22, 2007. After reading all of the comments on this model, I will replace it with a more reliable manufacturer and have the cabinet reworked with the appropriate vent kit, approx. $500.00.

Cost keeps going up, up and up!
by stavaclan ,Sep 04 '07
Pros: Fills the hole in "built in" cabinets. Cons: Faulty, costly and GE support that ignores the problem.
Purchased the GE microwave in October 2001, through the builder of our home. We will have replaced the magnetron twice on 8-27-06 ($132 labor cost) and on 8-29-07, a service tech confirms the magnetron died again. This time a trip charge cost was $74.95 and the magnetron cost is up to $156.96. So aside from the purchase price, we have shelled out almost $364 and counting. I am surprised there is not a class action started and how a company like GE can ignore the problem (see posts regarding GE microwave oven fires/problems).
We have also had parts replaced in our GE dishwasher (fire recall), and oven (keypad problems). Moral...find another manufacturer that stands behind and markets a reliable, safe product.

Marginal quality
by cerber_os ,Dec 28 '04
Pros: Works well untill magnetron will fail Cons: Low quality of the major part
Worked for five years (bought with the new house) then magnetron expired. 10 years warranty on magnetron is of questionable utility as service is not covered but it will cost at least $85 and at the same time the part won't be shipped to you even if you know how to replace it. Would rather avoid buying GE microwave equipment equiped with korean (Samsung) magnetron.

Allyket

Pros: The JE1640 lasted 8 1/2 years. Not too bad. Cons: Being a built-in makes it hard to find a replacement to fit.
This product was in my new house when we moved in April, 2001. It has worked fine until last night when I heard a strange noise and checked the vegetables I was heating. They were cold and there was an odor.
I called GE and decided that after almost 8 1/2 years it was not worth repairing so I am now on a quest to find a new microwave that will fit. Sears doesn't have many to chose from so I am now working with Pacific Sales and hope they can find one that will fit.
I can't say anything too bad about the JE1640 as it performed great for 8 1/2 years. It probably cost only about 150.00. The bigger probelm is finding a model to fit into the cabinet. If I had room I would just put one on my counter and use the cabinet for something else.

Good medium use, general purpose...
by miketalus_dt3000 ,Jul 08 '02
Good medium use, general purpose unit but mfgr
quality is marginal and diminishes value.
Extended warranty from mfgr is too pricey.
Don't recommend this unit.

Worked only for about 3 years
by mr_frustrated ,Dec 29 '05
Pros: Works fine until the magnetron went out. Cons: Not a durable product. Seems like a the product has a serious design flaw.
Got this as part of my new house. Worked only for about 3 years. One fine day, the microwave started buzzing while in operation. It never worked since then. The light comes on but the food does not heat. I am trying to find a replacement for the microwave that can fit in the trim kit I have. No luck yet.
